Strong winter storms to bring high winds, heavy rain to Carson City region
UPDATE 4:10PM to reflect new video weather briefing: Damaging wind, heavy rain and the potential of minor flooding are possible for the Carson City region as a series of strong winter storms push through California into western Nevada.
Ahead of the systems will be high winds, which has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a High Wind Warning through 4 p.m. Friday.
The weather service says winds from the south to southwest will increase today ahead of the storm systems, bring 30 to 40 mph average wind speed with gusts of 70 mph and up to 80 mph in wind prone areas. With the high winds there's a possibility of hazardous driving conditions, damage to trees and power lines. Loose outdoor furniture should be secured, the weather service advises.
With the wind will come rain and this series of storms are expected to bring a lot of it to the region, especially in the lower elevations of the Sierra. Showers may begin appearing late tonight into Friday with periods of heavy rain Friday and Saturday into Saturday night.
Snow levels for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra will rise on Saturday to above 8,000 feet Saturday afternoon and near 10,000 feet on Saturday night before a cold front passes through the Sierra and Western Nevada on Sunday. Snow levels will then quickly drop to 6,000 to 7,000 feet behind the front, ending the flood threat to the lower valleys.
Areas of greatest risk for flooding are around small creeks and streams west of Highway 395 from Lassen County South through Reno, Lake Tahoe, Carson City and into northern Mono County. Mud and rock slides are possible in areas of steep terrain and near recent wildfire burn areas. A flood watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.
Rainfall amounts Saturday through Sunday morning are 2 to 4 inches possible in the Lake Tahoe Basin with isolated amounts up to six inches along Highway 89. Across Western Nevada rainfall amounts of up to 2 inches are possible in the foothills with up to an inch on the valley floors.
