What Works: 5 ways to cope with stress during the holidays
The actual Super Bowl might not be for a few more months. But, right now, you are going through your own big game. It’s the big game of coping with stress during the holidays. So many demands are placed on us during the holidays.
Family, kids, pets, work, companies, relationships, they all rise to a different level of attention and commitment. With all these demands, how can you cope with stress? I hope this helps you deal with whatever the holiday season throws at you.
If you are more of a video person, I did a video live from my brother’s guess bedroom in San Antonio, Texas. See the video below or the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvF4M-wO_44
Breathe: Your breath is a great tool to use. It has the power to calm you down or stress you out. Slow breath, deep breath, is calming. Fast and shallow breath can create more anxiety and stress than you are already experiencing.
Ground: Grounding exercises bring you into the present moment while detaching you a little from the problem. What are three things you can see, touch, smell, taste, or hear in the moment? Use these touches of reality to bring you back to what matters to you.
Decide What Matters: Decide what matters versus what is demanded. They may be different things. What matters to me in this moment is… (fill in the blank). When you address what matters versus what is demanded, you can do things like get dinner on the table, have an important conversation, or hug a loved one.
It’s Temporary: Realize this too shall pass. Most moments are not permanent, they pass. A lot of holiday drama is amplified by reacting to something in the moment when you should allow it to pass. Use the breathing and grounding tools to bring you back to yourself if you are stressed.
Make a Choice: Now that you have come into the present moment and out of the emotionally charged nature of the holidays, you can make a choice about how you want to show up and act. Your emotions, thoughts, and feelings are a matter of choice if you can gain control of the psychological and physiological triggers that can set you off.
What’s your choice today? Have a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season everyone!
