Soroptimists seek young volunteer for award
Carson City Soroptimists are now accepting applications for their annual Violet Richardson Award. This award is a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities or schools. Deadline to apply is December 1, 2010.
The Violet Richardson Award is given to young women whose volunteer activities make the community and world a better place. All awards are given for activities conducted on a volunteer basis. Volunteer activity can include, but is not limited to, projects that address social problems, education, health, or the environment. Projects that benefit women or girls are especially valued.
This award is based solely on the applicant’s volunteer work. This award is an opportunity to honor a girl who might not otherwise receive recognition. She may not be the best student, the best athlete, or the most popular girl in school, but she is committed to making the world a better place. The girl’s choice of volunteer organization will also be recognized in the award.
Applicants must be young women 14 to 17 years of age as of December 1 – the deadline for application. Applicants must be engaged in volunteer activity. Soroptimists, Soroptimist employees and the immediate families of both are ineligible. Immediate family is defined as parents, siblings and children by adoption, blood or marriage. Previous winners of the award are also ineligible.
More information, instructions for applying, and an online application are available at http://www.sicarsoncity.org/home/violet_richardson_award or by contacting Jean Bondiett, Violet Richardson Award chair, at 883-7907. Applications must be received by December 1, 2010.
Soroptimist International of Carson City is a volunteer organization for business and professional women that works to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. Founded in 1957, the Carson City club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas. Carson City members join with almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories to contribute time and financial support to community-based projects benefiting women. In addition to the Violet Richardson Award, the Carson City club funds mammograms for uninsured local women, awards thousands of dollars in scholarships each year, funds legal aid for local victims of domestic violence, and provides funds to other local non-profit organizations through their Service Grants program. In addition, the club participates in Soroptimist International of the Americas’ major service project, the Women’s Opportunity Awards program, which provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.
