Carson City arrests: Man jailed after attempting to cash stolen check at bank

A Carson City man was arrested Friday on felony suspicion of uttering a forged instrument after attempting to cash a stolen check at a bank, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

William J. Stockwell was arrested at 10:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of East College Parkway. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a bank regarding a customer attempting to make an illegal transaction. According to witnesses the man and female entered the bank earlier in the morning where the suspect endorsed a check drawn on an account of a manufacturing company located in Garden Grove, Calif.

The check was made out to Stockwell for $1,184 and dated Oct. 31, 2016. Once the teller checked the account with the bank’s computer, she realized there was a fraud alert on the account. Further research by the bank reveled the check was reported stolen from the account holder. The man was read his Miranda rights and he agreed to speak.

The suspect advised the check was sent to him by his sister in California who had been sending him checks of the same nature, for the past six years. He provided his sister’s name, and phone number where a deputy attempted to contact her. Once contacted the person who answered the phone advised there was no woman by that name at the number.

The suspect was not able to provide any further information regarding the check, frequency of receipt and the nature of the funds. He claimed ignorance and advised he was in fact the victim. The bank staff provided a written statement and gave the officer the fake check bearing the suspect’s endorsement and his two fingerprints. he was arrested for suspicion of uttering a forged instrument and taken to jail. Bail: $5,000.

In other arrests:
— A 35-year-old Carson City man, Roland Arechiga, was arrested Thursday, 10:30 p.m. for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, and parole and probation violation. Bail: $2,500.

— A 56-year-old Carson City man, David Strouse, was arrested Thursday, 11 p.m. in the 3300 block of Imperial for on a felony parole and probation violation hold. He was being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 27-year-old Dayton woman booked Friday, 6:10 a.m. into Carson City Jail for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Aug. 18, 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 30-year-old transient was booked into Carson City Jail on Friday, 2:05 a.m. in a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued in August 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. He also was arrested on a Douglas County parole and probation hold. Bail: $5,000.

— A 42-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday, 11:13 p.m. in the 600 block of Hot Springs Road for misdemeanor suspicion of being in violation of a temporary protection order and misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $2,137.

— A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 9:18 p.m. in the 1000 block of Siskiyou Drive for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant. Bail: $1,000.

— A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday, 5:05 p.m. in the area of Kit Sierra Loop for misdemeanor DUI and contempt of court warrants. Bail: $5,350.

— A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 4:19 p.m. in the 5400 block of Highway 50 East for two misdemeanor failure to appear warrants for traffic. Bail: $2,266.

— A 73-year-old Virginia City man was arrested Thursday, 2:31 p.m. in the 2100 block of Michael Street for misdemeanor suspicion of violation of a temporary restraining order and obstructing and resisting arrest. Bail: $1,489.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports and cases from citizens scammed during fraudulent business transactions.

The suspect in the shooting of two Silver Springs, NV residents on June 26, 2024 has been positively identified as 53 year old Silver Springs resident Stephen Thomas Shytle. At this time, Shytle’s whereabouts are unknown.

Just before noon a fire was reported on BLM land in Brunswick Canyon.

According to Fire Chief Sean Slamon, it is a vegetation fire in a remote part of Brunswick Canyon.

At approximately 5:30 PM on June 26, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Central Command Patrol Squad responded to the Lahontan State Park Ranger Station at Lake Lahontan for a report of an adult male subject who had been shot multiple times. Upon arrival, deputies learned that the shooting took place at a residence in the 3900 block of Birch Street in Silver Springs.

The Douglas County Commissioners approved a special use permit for a Beer Garden at Zephyr Cove Resort over the 4th of July weekend. There has been a lot of concern about the event after the 2023 party at the adjacent Zephyr Shoals that left behind 8,000 pounds of trash, and videos of a massive party scene with drinking, including underage drinking.

The Pony Express returned to the capital city Wednesday, making its annual re-ride across the West. 
This year, as an even-numbered year, the re-ride began in St. Joseph Missouri on June 17 and will continue east into California.
