UPDATE 1:07PM: An 83-year-old man was rescued late Tuesday morning after being out overnight in the snow in Brunswick Canyon. He was found by a search and rescue team, flown out of by a Washoe County RAVEN helicopter, and then taken by Care Flight. He is in serious condition with hypothermia, said Bill Fergus, Vice Commander of Carson City Search and Rescue.
The man was found at an elevation of around 6,200 feet with anywhere between 3-4 inches of snow on the ground in the location where he was found. Six of the man's dogs were being recovered in the rescue operation by a SAR ground team, Fergus said. At one point, when the RAVEN helicopter team rappelled from the helicopter to rescue the man, a dog ran over to the rescuer and began licking his face, said Fergus.
The man was dressed in casual clothes and shoes, with a light jacket on when he was found. He didn't have food or anything else with him except the dogs, Fergus said.
"We 're really grateful this was a rescue operation and not a recovery," said Fergus.
Search and Rescue were called out at around 5 p.m. Monday to search for the man, who lives off-the-grid in the canyon area. Douglas County and Washoe County search and rescue teams joined in the search. It was called off at around 1 a.m. and resumed first thing early this morning, said Fergus. Conditions in the canyon were cold and snowy.
