Elderly man dies after being rescued with dogs in Brunswick canyon
The 83-year-old man who was rescued late Tuesday morning after being lost overnight in the snow in Brunswick Canyon has died, officials confirmed. The man was found in the Pine Nut Mountain Range by a search and rescue team, flown out of the canyon by a Washoe County RAVEN helicopter, and then taken by Care Flight to the hospital where he died.
When he was found he was in serious condition with hypothermia, said Bill Fergus, Vice Commander of Carson City Search and Rescue.
"We received word that he passed away," said Fergus. "We are not sure of the cause, but he did make it through the night up there with his dogs with him."
All six dogs that were with the man have been recovered and returned to their home, said Fergus. The home is occupied by the man's wife who had reported him missing.
The elderly man was found at an elevation of around 6,200 feet with anywhere between 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. The man was dressed in casual clothes and shoes, with a light jacket on when he was found. He didn't have food or anything else with him except the dogs.
Search and Rescue were called out at around 5 p.m. Monday to search for the man, who lived off-the-grid in the canyon area. Douglas County and Washoe County search and rescue teams joined in the search. It was called off at around 1 a.m. and resumed first thing early this morning, said Fergus. Conditions in the canyon were cold and snowy.
