Western Nevada College hosts Dia de los Muertos event Thursday to share Latino culture with community
Carson City’s Western Nevada College Campus hosted a Dia de los Muertos event in honor of the Day of the Dead in the Bristlecone building Thursday.
In addition to traditional altar displays, children from the WNC daycare and preschool attended and played games such as Mexican Bingo as seen in the first photo, put on by the Latino Outreach Program. The program began at 11 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m
“We want to encourage children to learn a second language,” said Lupe Ramirez, WNC’s Latino Outreach Coordinator said. “Playing games like Mexican Bingo is a fun way to allow them to practice their language skills.”
There was free food, art, cultural lessons and more all out on display for both students and the public alike.
“We want to be able to share Hispanic culture with people, as well as honor our ancestors,” said German Fernandez, Parent Ambassador in the Latino Outreach Program. “Different cultures from different areas of Mexico and Latin America are represented by variations in the altars.”
In addition to the College’s event held on campus, WNC is also partnering with the Nevada State Museum to bring a Dia de los Muertos full day event to the museum which will include several altars from different groups, food trucks, folk dancing, and more.
