Business Spotlight: New owners of Talents bring renewed enthusiasm for indoor sports
Talents Athletic Center isn’t just a place to come in and play out of the inclement Northern Nevada weather. It’s also Carson City’s premier location for indoor soccer and flag football games.
Brothers Shams and Obaid Mobaligh bring a shared passion for these sports that has reinvigorated the indoor arena, located at 2749 North Carson Street in between Harbor Freight Tools and the Dollar Tree.
Upon purchasing the business in March 2016, their vision was to bring the Talents Athletic Center (TAC) back to life again by spreading their joy for all things soccer and flag-football related.
“When we heard the previous owner had close down TAC, my brother and I decided to purchase the business with the mission to provide our community a fun and friendly environment and for youths to foster their soccer and flag football talent,” Shams Mobaligh said.
The brothers have played soccer their entire lives, Shams said, including as part of indoor and outdoor leagues in Carson City over the past decade.
They’ve also coach youth teams for American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and other competitive leagues, he said.
The empty TAC business seemed like a natural fit for the Mobaligh brothers, and the indoor venue meant games could be played year around.
“We thought it would really benefit the community, especially during the cold winters,” Shams Mobaligh said. “Our business model is not to make money, but enough to pay for monthly cost such rent, utilities and maintaining a clean facility.”
What is part of the business model is making TAC an appealing place for youth and adults to come play or watch indoor soccer and flag football matches.
Shams said it’s just as important for he and his brother to spread education about the sports as it is the fun.
“We want this to be a place for youth in Carson City to play, learn and have an active life,” he said.
Besides the field and arena, the 20,000 square-foot athletic center includes a separate space for events or birthday parties where children can play bubble soccer and enjoy a bounce house, Shams said.
The party room is available for up to 150 people, he said, and is appropriate family events such as baptisms, Quinceaneras and even small wedding receptions.
Shams said he and his brother plan to hold more year around tournaments at TAC to attract more regional teams from Nevada and Northern California.
