When Will Truce and Jake Conway worked as high school teachers in Carson City, a colleague offered them some crystallized honey from his bee farm, and the two began experimenting with making mead, the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage brewed by fermenting honey with water and sometimes referred to as ‘honey wine.’

The framers of the Constitution had George Washington in mind when they entrusted authority to the office of chief executive. The framers could not have imagined a Donald Trump, even with stimulants.

Jeff Glass has been teaching entrepreneurial classes to the youth of Carson City for years, and now, as his students grow up, they’re branching out to run businesses of their own.

One such student is Paul Klemm, the owner of Carson City’s Rehaul.

“Rehaul started as an effort to develop a student run business,” said Glass.

Caitlin Jemma is a musician born and raised in Virginia City. She has been touring the globe for several years now, spreading her message of love and music.

Jemma recently completed a European tour, and now she's back in the Silver State. She was scheduled to perform at Piper's Opera House tonight for the West Coast Songwriter's Showcase in Virginia City, until Mother Nature stepped in.

Why would someone write an article on buying versus renting a home? What’s in it for the author of the article?
Why would you read one?

What is it you want to hear? Do you just want confirmation and justification for what you already believe and want to do? Or, are you looking to be convinced otherwise?

These are all good questions to ask yourself if you find yourself reading an article on whether it makes more sense to buy a home, or rent a house.

There are “reasons” to buy, and “reasons” to rent.

Are you aware that June is National Homeownership month?

Probably not. Because you’re too busy working to afford the home you live in, whether you rent it or own it.

Why should you care?
If you poke around and read anything you can find about it, you’re being urged to recognize and celebrate the benefits of homeownership.

That seems kind of a weird thing to ask you to do. Do you really have the time or care? What’re you supposed to do, throw a party? Sit alone and contemplate it? Invite some friends out for coffee and chat about it?

Sometimes Nevada can be, well, uniquely Nevada. Perhaps this’s why, in this major fire season and after great amounts of snow and flooding from the melt, a state of emergency was declared. A state of emergency because recreational cannabis dispensaries are running out of weed!

Today, I’m going to put on my career coaching hat for this column. Lately, I have run into a lot of educated professionals who are having difficulty finding gainful employment.

Children are naturally willing to take risks. We can easily recognize this as they tackle the playground, go down the largest slide, jump from the highest point, and show off their abilities to their parents. Many times they will fall as they are learning to walk, and with determination, they will keep getting back up for their next attempt.

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.

Or, is it?

I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.

Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

A 45-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Wednesday for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and misdemeanor violation of alternative sentencing conditions, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The plain news is that Tesla motors sealed a deal with Nevada to locate a major new plant in Reno. You'd think that would be good news, with major investment and thousands of permanent jobs for the area. People should be cheering. But it comes in exchange for major tax breaks. That’s the bad news. So, instead of cheering, some people are turning on the Governor and others. Some, like the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI) are raising policy, legal and constitutional issues.

A 33-year-old Carson City woman and a 44-year-old man were arrested Nov. 6, 5:21 p.m. in the 3500 block of Highway 50 East, They face various misdemeanor drug charges.

Sometimes it takes a while to get the big picture, to see things coming into focus. Now, I am not much for conspiracy theories, but if anything looks like it is being driven by design, this is one. CARSON CITY – Term limited Assembly Speaker John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, today announced he will run for Congress in one of four districts that have yet to be finalized in Nevada’s contested redistricting process.
Oceguera, a native fourth-generation Nevadan, said he wants to bring his skills in finding compromise on difficult issues honed in the Nevada Legislature over the past nearly dozen years to the House of Representatives.

If you saw "Hangover," the flag-waver for the series, you know what "Hangover Part 2 (or II, it wavers) is all about. You probably know it so well that there's not a lot of attraction to seeing "Part 2.) Same cast, same story (but switched to Bangkok) same gags, same car chases (although a car chase in a Bangkok market with the good guys being chased by two motorcycle killers is a bit different, but not really).

Carl Kuhl, a state Parole and Probation employee of six years, has created a plan that he claims will eliminate Nevada's budget deficit within two years.

In a news release issued on Tuesday, Kuhl said his plan not only will reduce the budget deficit but also help repair Nevada's economy at the same time. It is a pretty big claim, he admits, coming from an Accounting Assistant I, an entry level position.

Carson City authorities arrested a couple on multiple charges, including child endangerment, domestic battery and unlawful posession and sale of prescription drugs.

Angela Rebecca Virginia Bowman, 19, of Mound House is being held on $7,500 bail and faces two felony drug charges including possession of prescription drugs without a prescription and possession for sale.
David Joseph Wright, 26, also of Mound House, faces a gross misdemeanor child endangerment charge and a domestic battery charge.

It’s hardly a surprise to those living in Nevada that the unemployment rate is high, 14 percent more or less depending on who’s counting. The state is in a hole because of poor tax structure, decreased tourist visits and encroaching California Indian casinos, among other things.

And all the experts are predicting a slow growth and return to the basic 3 or 4 percent unemployment.
The Obama Adminnistration in Washington says we’re on the track to recovery and if we can just control the lunacy that is the New York Stock Exchange and others we’ll be all right.

Yeah.

CARSON CITY – Half a dozen former employees of a Las Vegas-based gaming company laid off last year say they are still owed about $500,000 in severance pay and other compensation even as the firm continues to receive financial support from high profile investors, including the brother of President Obama’s chief of staff.
One of the former TableMAX Gaming employees, Tyson Wrensch, said efforts to contact current company officials to resolve the compensation issue have not produced any results so far.

Many teens looking for a jobs face the added challenge of finding work in during a recession.

Teen jobs have gone down since the mid 2000s, because more people — including out of work adults — are competing for the same jobs that traditionally went to teenagers.

Older workers are now commonly found working as grocery store baggers, fast food workers, amusement park staff, etc. Now that school is out more teens are looking for summer jobs.

Obtaining leases from three state agencies has been cited by the people pushing the Nugget Project as a critical piece to its success.

But, there's been more than a little skepticism that the State of Nevada, staring down the barrel of a $3 billion deficit in its next budget, has any appetite for spending money it doesn't have to.

An article in the Nevada Appeal this morning attempts to get new information from the Nugget Project’s “go to guy,” Steve Neighbors. Neighbors, who is now the owner of the Nugget, is quoted as saying that the project still lacks a developer to shoulder the “private industry” half of the project. That’s about all that’s new from Neighbors, that they STILL don’t have a private partner.
