Letter from Nevada Day Executive Director on the return of the Nevada Day Parade
Yes 2021 has arrived, how sweet it is, let us all bid adieu to 2020. As Bugs Bunny once said: “Well goodbye, and don’t think it hasn’t been a little slice of heaven, cause it hasn't."
The Nevada Day Committee is simply hitting the rewind button for this year’s event, so if you missed it last year, among everything else you missed, here is a recap: little did we know another historic milestone was about to take place.
This year will be our state’s 157th birthday, and also marks 83 years since the Nevada Day Celebration moved to our capitol, featuring a large parade in downtown Carson City.
The 2021 parade theme is “Historic Moments in Nevada.”
Numerous moments throughout our state’s history have helped shape and define Nevada. From the day this glorious state was born on October 31, 1864 during the Civil War, to the current year 2021, specific periods in time during our 157 years of statehood tend to stand out and set us apart from the other 49.
From the historic Gold and Silver Boom in the Comstock, legalized gaming and prostitution, quickie divorces (I imagine with some of the earlier settlers this could have happened in that exact order) UFO sightings (landings?), and on to the more recent decision of legalizing cannabis. Yes, Nevada has indeed had its share of unique moments occur in the past, with undoubtedly more in store for the future.
I am honored to be part of this incredible historic event, as Nevada is one of the only states to celebrate its Admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. Although I have heard rumors about a couple other states that celebrate theirs as well, if indeed that is the case, I guarantee they do not do it like we do!
Our family moved here in the summer of 1972. I attended first grade, and also attended my first Nevada Day Parade that year. I have not left–I’ve found no reason to–and am now going on my 12th year with Nevada Day, Inc.
I never tire of seeing the pride and joy of my fellow Nevadans as we celebrate our state’s birthday, and this year we have some serious making up to do.
Happy Birthday, Nevada!
