University of Nevada Cooperative Extension hires new Carson City Extension educator
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension welcomes Lindsay Chichester to its statewide team of Extension educators. She will begin her new position as Carson City Extension educator Jan. 1.
“I’m thrilled,” Carson City Board of Supervisors Member Karen Abowd said about hiring Chichester. “She’s a local with a vast source of knowledge on agriculture and growing. I also appreciate that she has experience in engaging others within the community, and we look forward to that engagement.”
Chichester recently worked in Saunders County, where she focused on livestock programming and online engagement, as well as 4-H youth development agricultural programming. She also has five years of experience as an Extension educator with University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she also focused on livestock and 4-H agricultural programing, along with community development programming.
Her experience also includes work with food safety, agriculture business, plants and soil, and environmental sciences, with skills in community outreach and engagement, youth development, experiential learning, horticulture and cropping systems.
“Chichester has extensive community educational work in agriculture and 4-H at the University of Nebraska, one of the preeminent Extension systems in the nation,” Extension Northern Nevada Area Director Frank Flavin said.
“She is an excellent fit for Carson City with her background in crisis communications, given the frequent occurrences of wildfire in the area. Carson City is also very high in radon, and Chichester’s experience in radon education in Nebraska will correlate well with Extension’s efforts in Nevada.”
Chichester has a doctorate in systems agriculture, along with master’s degrees in animal science and speech communication.
As the new Carson City Extension educator, Chichester will work to develop, deliver and evaluate effective science- based educational programs, ensuring that programs result in measurable, positive impacts. She will work with diverse cultural and community interests.
Chichester's arrival comes after JoAnne Skelly retired June 1 after 23 years as Associate Professor and Extension Educator for Carson City and Storey County.
