UNR students, Sen. Heller to launch campus-wide consent initiative
Sexual conduct and how to receive consent is the topic of a new campaign being launched at the University of Nevada, Reno. With national attention addressing sexual assault on college campuses, the University continues to be part of the dialogue to ensure all students, faculty and staff create a safe, respectful and welcoming campus environment.
WHAT: A conversation around respectful and healthy sexual conduct will take place as part of the I STAND campaign launch. In addition to speakers addressing key topics related to sexual assault, students will pledge to stand for consent and intervention when necessary.
“Sexual assault is a very real issue on campuses across the country that must be taken seriously,” U.S. Senator Dean Heller said. “I applaud the University and its students for taking the initiative to launch ‘I STAND’ to bring awareness and action to this topic. It is my goal that students, universities and communities throughout the country will follow suit and make it a priority to end sexual assault.”
“Ongoing efforts by the University have generated a lot of good student attention to the topic of sexual assault,” Jo Harvey, program specialist in the University’s Office of Student Conduct, said. “Students have asked for a campaign like this and we’re thrilled to provide our support.”
The event is sponsored by the Panhellenic Council and the Office of the Associate Dean of Students.
WHO:
U.S. Senator Dean Heller will discuss the Campus Accountability and Safety Act.
Alison Gaulden, Reynolds School of Journalism faculty and former Planned Parenthood lobbyist will talk to students about the role sexual education plays in social and reproductive justice.
Tory Clark, certified clinical sexologist and adjunct faculty member at the University will discuss issues pertaining to culture and gender equality.
Representatives from the Office of Student Conduct, University Counseling Services, Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX and the Crisis Call Center will also be on hand offering students information about their services.
