Carson City weather: Forecasters say damaging winds possible with system arriving this week
National Weather Service forecasters say it is likely that a weather system expected to arrive later this week will bring strong, gusty winds to the Carson City region beginning late Thursday into Friday and mountain rain and snow that could affect travel through the weekend.
Forecasters have high confidence that strong winds will arrive in the area and last through the weekend that could impact air travel with delays or cancellations. A High Wind Watch for Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe areas has been issued beginning Thursday.
The National Weather Service advises that strong crosswinds may result in high profile vehicles being rerouted especially along Highway 395 and Interstate 580. Sierra ridge wind gusts will be over 100 mph along with south to southwest winds 50 to 70 mph.
For western Nevada south to southwest wind will be 20 to 30 mph, up to 60 mph and in some wind prone areas, gusts up to 70 mph, along with high fire danger south of Interstate 80. Power outages, tree ad fence damage are possible. The weather service advises people to bring in their Halloween decorations and trash cans. Secure trampolines and bring in the small dogs.
As for rain and snow, forecasters say they have medium confidence that the weather system will produce a good amount of rain in the mountains, and some rain in the valley, with the potential for snow along Sierra passes by Sunday night.
Heavy mountain rain is expected with the first round along with high elevation snow above 8,500 feet. Snow levels will lower Sunday into Sunday night with travel impacts possible due to snow along the Sierra passes, such as Spooner, Kingsbury, Donner, Echo, and Mt Rose. Rain totals will be between 3-5 inches for the Sierra from Thursday night through late Sunday.
Rain totals for western Nevada will likely be limited to around a half and inch to an inch due to strong shadowing by the Sierra, according to weather service forecasters.
The weather service advises that the forecast is subject to change and that it will know more in the coming days.
