Carson City area road report for week of Oct. 11-17

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 11-17, 2021. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— Curry Street between 5th Street and Musser Street will be closed in the northbound direction, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for road construction. Pedestrian closures and detours will also be in place. Please plan accordingly.

— Kings Canyon Road west of Longview Way remains closed 7 days a week, all day, for roadway reconstruction. Only local residential access will be provided. The Waterfall Trailhead and parking area is closed. There is no access or parking for the trails. Please do not come up Kings Canyon unless you live in the area.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— Clearview Drive between Silver Sage Drive and Oak Street will be reduced to one lane with flaggers, Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm for roadway reconstruction. Please use caution and expect delays.

— Colorado Street between Carson Street and Saliman Road will be reduced to one lane, Thursday and Friday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for underground utility repair. Please use caution and expect delays.

— Long Street between Roop Street and Rand Street will be reduced to one lane with flaggers, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Long Street at Rand Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider and alternate route.

— Marian Avenue at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Molly Street at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— Silver Sage Drive between Snyder Avenue and Clearview Drive will be reduced to one lane, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:00pm for road repair. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

— State Street at Long Street will be flagger controlled, Monday through Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm for roadway reconstruction. Please expect delays and consider an alternate route.

CARSON CITY — Nevada State Museum is excited to celebrate Women’s History Month with the launch of a new series of commemorative medallions honoring women who made a mark in Nevada’s story.

Carson High School Senior Adam Sulik, 17, was crowned ‘Mr. Carson High’ Friday evening at the school’s cheerleader fundraising event in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

A "Back Nevada Blue" rally is being held this morning at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. It is hosted by the Nevada Police Union, which includes state troopers, parole and probation officers, fire marshals, detectives, game wardens, park rangers, university police, capitol police, agricultural police, dispatchers, and retired state police.

Carson City Historical Society is proud to host a lecture on the future of the Nevada State Prison called "The Once and Future Prison," on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. The guest speaker is Glen Whorton, past President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.

Kimberly Adams officially files candidacy for Carson City Assessor. Kimberly, the current Chief Deputy Assessor has worked for the Carson City Assessor’s Office for over 20 years.

The Nevada Green Business Network is a part of a statewide effort to generate a green business certification program.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Emergency Management announced Monday the implementation of Nevada’s Geopolitical Cyber awareness efforts, including a policy group, State Emergency Operations Center and information-sharing platform for the state.

Sheriff Kenny Furlong filed for re-election this morning as the doors opened at the Recorders Office. The Sheriff stated that it was important to he and his family that the filing be done immediately on the first date for candidates, as this office is so critical to the welfare of the city.

Carson City Treasurer Andrew Rasor has filed to retain his position as the Carson City Treasurer. Andrew has served as the Carson City Treasurer since Monday, May 10, 2021 when the Carson City Board of Supervisors appointed him as the Treasurer of Carson City following the retirement of former Treasurer Gayle Robertson.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner said Monday that Anna Scott, 23, whose body was found inside a burned vehicle on I-580 south of Reno on the morning of Feb 3., died of a gunshot wound.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies made numerous arrests over the weekend, including arrests for alleged DUI, drugs and warrant offenses.

Scott Hoen, an expert with three decades of experience in public and private sector finance, as well as a depth of knowledge of government operations, filed the necessary paperwork to run for Carson City Clerk Recorder.

Longtime Carson City resident Curtis Horton filed his candidacy today for Carson City Supervisor Ward 3. Horton retired as the Carson City Public Works Deputy Director in 2020.

Carson City Ward 1 Supervisor Stacey Giomi filed for re-election Monday. Giomi was first elected in 2018.

UPDATE 9:34 a.m. The gas line has been clamped, according to a Carson City Fire Department battalion chief. The scene has been turned over to Southwest Gas and the area is clear.

Carson City Fire Department was called Monday morning to a gas leak in the area of Elizabeth and West Robinson Street.
The gas leak, reported at 8:46 a.m., is from a 2-inch main, according to a CCFD battalion chief. Southwest Gas has been called. Nearby residences have been evacuated and traffic in the area has been closed. Motorists should avoid the area.

With golf season rapidly approaching full swing, the Carson City Sunday Men’s Club is accepting applications for those 18 and over who desire a welcoming environment to play competitively with friends, co-workers, and even family members.

The Mile High Jazz Band will be joined by singer Jakki Ford and five award-winning poets and readers for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry on Tuesday, March 15, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at A to Zen Studio, 1803 N. Carson Street in Carson City.

Western Nevada College faculty members Timothy Mayo, Martin Schmidt and Rachel Stiff reached a teaching pinnacle on Thursday when they received tenure from the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.

Wilber Ernesto Martinez Guzman has been sentenced for a slew of convictions following his 2019 murder spree around northern Nevada.

Guzman was sentenced to an additional 214 years on top of his four lifetime terms last week, including 54 years related to robbery charges in Carson City stemming from the murder scenes.

After I raked leaves a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the robins were having a great time finding the worms I had disturbed under the leaf litter. Worms are one of nature’s mind-boggling creatures.
