Senator Square: Theater and music productions, cancer awareness and flu vaccinations in October

Currently playing at the Carson City Community Center is the "House of Bernalda Alba" performed by CHS Theater students. The dramatic play had its first show this past weekend. It will continue this coming weekend with performances on Oct. 9, 10, 11 at 7p.m. and again at 2 p.m. on Oct. 11. General admission prices are $10 at the door, $5 for students. Coming up on October 21 at the Carson City Community Center is the first instrumental concert. Come listen to the various bands perform a variety of music. Mariachi, jazz, orchestra and wind ensemble groups will all perform that night at 7 p.m. Contact band director Bill Zabelsky for more information at bzabelsky@carson.k12.nv.us.

Also coming up is the first choir concert performance on Oct. 22 at the community center. A variety of songs will be performed by the Concert, Chamber, Choir I & II groups, as well as both musical theater classes. A suggested donation of $4 admission fee will be charged that will go directly back to the choir department. Flu vaccinations at CHS
Flu vaccinations are scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10 at CHS. Paperwork has been sent home with the students and need to be returned the day of the vaccination. Vaccine administration fee is $20 if your child’s insurance does not cover the vaccinations, or your child does not have insurance. A phone message will be sent home next week to remind parents of the school based flu vaccination clinics. If you have any questions please call the school nurse, Sheila Story, at 283-1675. 
    
Host Families Sought
Want to learn more about culture and customs in Europe? South America? Asia? Then host a Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) student. Each year, two or three RYE students from different parts of the world are sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Carson City and attend Carson High School. Each student lives with two or three local families throughout their school year, spending three to five months with each family. If you are interested in hosting an interesting young adult from another country please contact Chas Macquarie of the Carson City Rotary Club at cmacquarie@lumosengineering.com.  ​

Lip Sync Tickets
Alright Carson High, we've already had our Lip Sync Auditions and I have to say that this year's groups are pretty awesome. If you don't believe me, go see for yourself. You can buy your tickets for the Lip Sync before school, during nutrition, at lunch or after school in the Student Finance Office. Tickets are $3 with your SBC sticker and $4 without, up until the day of the Lip Sync. Tickets will go up to $5 at the door on October 14th at the Carson City Community Center. If you participate in this month's Socktober and bring a new set of socks to donate at the door, your ticket price will gladly be discounted to $3.

Hey Carson it is a tradition to wear pink on Mondays in October to raise awareness about breast cancer. Please join the cause and sport your pink. If you want a Senators fight cancer t-shirt, they are still available in room 256 for $10. Get yours today. Don't forget to wear pink on Monday!

University Visit

A representative from Grand Canyon University will be visiting Carson High on Friday, October during AB55. This is a private Christian University in Phoenix, Arizona. If you're interested in this type of school, please come by the Guidance Office to get a pass so you can join us. 



Student of the week
This week's student of the week is Nick Campbell. Nick is a freshman at Carson High. He is a positive student who gives everything his best effort. Nick never hesitates to ask if a student or faculty member needs help, and is willing to lend a hand whenever it is needed. You rock Nick!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s Senior Spotlight is on Bailey Griffin. Bailey has a 4.51 grade-point average and is currently taking a variety of AP and honors classes. Bailey has been a member of National Honor Society since she was a sophomore and is currently serving as the Public Relations Officer. Bailey has been involved in concert band, wind ensemble, and marching band throughout her years in high school.

She is a 4H member and received the 4H 2013 Teen Leader Award. Bailey is also involved in her church youth group. Bailey plans on attending Harding University in Arkansas and is interested in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. Thanks Bailey for all your contributions to Carson High School and the Carson Community. CHS is proud of the contributions Bailey has made to her school and community and wish her the best of luck in the future.

A brushfire that occurred in Dayton Friday evening is currently in the mop up phase.

The fire which was reported just south east of Highway 50 is estimated to have burned around two to three acres and no structures were in danger.

Douglas County is pleased to announce the successful implementation of a new parking program at its beaches during the 4th of July holiday.

The July 4th celebration drew thousands to the Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Nevada area and its beaches.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) strategically deployed personnel to ensure safety and enforce regulations, protecting everyone enjoying the holiday. Several arrests were made for various crimes during the festivities.

In December of last year Carson City Moose Lodge #2709 donated three dozen Tommy Moose toys to the Carson Tahoe Hospital Emergency Department.

These were so well received by the children in the ER that the call went out that more were needed. Last week Carson Moose Lodge delivered four more dozen.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, a plane made an emergency landing on Highway 50 at Pradere in the Dayton area on Friday.

Over 100 volunteers showed up at Zephyr Shoals this morning for the annual post-July 4 cleanup. The increase in volunteers is due entirely to the horrors of last year’s cleanup during which volunteers and the League to Save Lake Tahoe cleaned up over 6,000 pounds of trash alone.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada have announced the acquisition of Creativity Corner, a daycare located on 2323 North Carson Street. Creativity Corner will be re-named the North Carson Center Smart Start under the management of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Thursday night to a small brush fire behind Meeks Lumber in north Carson City.

UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating a credit card skimmer device discovered Thursday at an East Carson City business.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its annual Sheriff’s Night Out at Mills Park from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6. There will be aircrafts, helicopters, law enforcement vehicles, mounted horses, fire engines, giveaways, music, games and more.

UPDATE 9:38PM: The fire on East Long Street was on the back patio of a two-story four-plex, according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. Damage was contained to the exterior patio and siding. There were no injuries. Three occupants were displaced.

When firefighters arrived, a neighbor and Carson City Sheriff's deputies had used garden hoses and fire extinguishers to knock much of it out, said Pedrini. The cause is under investigation.

MINDEN, Nev. — Austin's House, a nonprofit that provides emergency shelter for children in the northern Nevada region and beyond, is in the final weeks of ticket sales for its annual fundraising gala. Previously known as "Denim and Diamonds," the event has been renamed "Boots and Bling" and will be held at the Twisting T-Bar Ranch in Gardnerville on July 20. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division and other law enforcement agencies participating in Joining Forces will combine resources, which began Monday and will continue through July 20, 2024, to apprehend impaired drivers.
