Senator Square: Destination unknown is theme of Carson High School's 2021 Winterfest

The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

The Nevada Day Golf Tournament in remembrance of Mayor Bob Crowell will be held at Silver Oak Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. Dozens of fundraisers, including the Benson’s Feed 4 Paws 4-H group, will be scattered throughout the Carson City and Gardnerville areas. Combined with live music and several dinner specials, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

Senator Square: Carson High School's Carneta yearbook staff have successful year

At the end of the week before Spring Break, at 8:30 p.m., the final pages were submitted, and the book was officially finished. After months of interviewing, photographing, and editing, the book is currently being printed by Walsworth Publishing Co., in Marceline, Kansas.

Songstress, Latisha Lewis, leads the band during tonight’s Jazz Night at Living the Good Life; if you’ve got some chops, bring an instrument and join the jam.

Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

You’ll want to keep your outdoor activities limited when the air is like this, but it understandably leads to a feeling of cabin-fever. Take the family out for dinner tonight at Firehouse Subs on Highway 50; they are raising funds for a local family recovering from a car accident. You’ll want to continue to take it easy, the smoke from the California fires makes for unhealthy air conditions. Stop by the Carson City Art Gallery this evening for a meet and greet with this month’s featured artist, wood-turner Dave Mills. He will also be demonstrating his craft. Food truck lovers won’t want to miss out on Wheeled Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center. Let someone else handle the cooking and enjoy some time mingling with your neighbors.

The Carson City Fair has returned and it’s bringing all the excitement that one can expect from a down-home event. The talented kids in our regional 4-H programs will be showing off their hard work, carnival rides will be whirling, and the music will be playing. Our local bus, the JAC, is lending a hand and offering free rides through Sunday: Route 3 will take you from downtown to Fuji Park. Food truck lovers won’t want to miss out on Wheeled Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center.

Get there early to peruse the silent auction items and food vendors; the annual fundraising benefit for the Greenhouse Project is always the talk of the town. The Greatest Showman on Earth makes an appearance at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch: it’s Chautauqua night, and Doug Mishler will be portraying “Circus Showman P. T. Barnum.” The Stewart Indian School in east Carson City has history reaching into the early days of our state.

Saturday welcomes the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the year, the monthly Wine Walk, and Dayton’s annual Oodles of Noodles Festival and Pasta Cook-off.

Your early morning coffee might even come with a specially made heat sleeve in honor of the occasion. The Carson City Library is continually bringing something new to our community. Today, you can get certified to use their laser cutter and engraver in the new Maker Space, or you can get a dose of some international flavor. Their Diversity in Action program features Peruvian and Latin American Folkloric music, and is suitable for all ages.

This week’s ‘Flashback’ is the disco classic ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ in all its polyester glory. For those interested in a nursing career, Western Nevada College is hosting an informational meeting that will cover what can be expected for those enrolling in the educational program. Now that spring is more or less here, Carson City BMX is back on the track. You’ll find their races on Sunday mornings, but Wednesdays are for practice.

A break in the storm this afternoon will make for an easier trek home, but you can always take up the challenge after Spring break next week. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is fast approaching, and today is your last chance for in-person ticket sales. Head to the Carson High office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you’ve got cash in hand.
