Carson City supervisors this morning are hearing a proposal to spend $75,000 to Nevada State Fair underway in Carson City July 30 through Aug. 3, 2014.
The proposal in essence would be to tie Carson City to the Nevada Sesquicentennial festivities, allowing for seeds to be planted for a permanent return of a state fair after 2014. You can watch supervisors discuss the action-item here. After a brief break, discussion of the item continued at 10:10 a.m.
On June 6, upon a recommendation from the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission, the Carson City Board of Supervisors authorized the City Manager to form a Temporary committee to explore the feasibility of hosting a State Fair in Carson City. Go here for the background on the proposal.
Upon hearing the proposal, Supervisors have appeared skeptical about funding the $75,000 requested to hire a fair manager and other costs associated with launching the event. City staff says that in order to get the fair moving for 2014, the board must act now to approve the start up costs of $75,000. City staff has said it is working on partnerships to allow for the fair and cost-cutting measures.
The State Fair Feasibility Committee was made up of a cross section of community members from Carson City and Douglas County. The committee recommends that the Carson City Board of Supervisors approve funding and direct the City Manager to plan for a Nevada Sesquicentennial Fair in to be held at Fuji Park and Fairgrounds July 30-August 3, 2014.
The findings of this feasibility study show that this Fair will be highly beneficial to the city and area businesses and has a high probability of success. Additionally it has the potential to be a Nevada 150 Signature Event.
