Column: Question 2 not all it’s cooked up to be

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.

Or, is it?

I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.

Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

Start Up: Carson High students learn two sides of entrepreneurship

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

For a high school student to skip their lunch break, there's got to be a pretty significant reason behind it. For Carson High School, the cause of so many empty cafeteria seats on an otherwise normal school day was nothing short of big deal.

Start Up: Catch the Automation Wave, or risk drowning

“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.”
—Wayne Gretzky

I was talking with my 12-year-old daughter the other day about what she wants to do when she grows up. It’s the kind of conversation parents have been having with their children for many generations.

But in today’s world, this question has far deeper ramifications. That’s because a new technological wave is building on the horizon that will change the way we look at jobs, employment and the economy in general.

Start Up: Succeed by Failing

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

Failure gets a bad rap.

The fear of failing stops many people from pursuing what could be amazingly successful opportunities. After all, who likes to fail? When you are talking about a business, failure can be a humiliating experience, as well as costly.

But if you are afraid to fail, you will never succeed.

Start Up: Faster, Better, Cheaper…

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

In business, we often hear about companies that seem to come out of nowhere to become a big success. We see it locally in companies like Bentley Systems or Click Bond. We also see the Facebook’s and Alibaba’s of the world that seem to defy the laws of traditional business growth to become the mega-companies that rival 100 year old economic stalwarts like AT&T and GM.

Start Up: What is an Entrepreneur?

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

Entrepreneur is a word that gets used a lot, but what does it really mean? Most people would say an entrepreneur is someone that starts a business. But, just starting a business does not make someone an entrepreneur.

Bridge funding for WNC and GBC should be a top priority

With agency budgets currently being wrapped up in committee, one budget, for the Nevada System of Higher Education, is of special concern to residents of the rural counties. Chancellor Klaich requested bridge funding for Great Basin and Western Nevada Colleges to facilitate their smooth transition to the more austere funding model approved by the Legislature in 2013. The current leadership at these colleges have taken a can-do, entrepreneurial approach to the task, pulling out all the stops to grow their institutions into sustainable long term viability within the new budget constraints.

Start Up: What’s the real difference between Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs?

Start-Up! is weekly column on entrepreneurship, start-ups, technology and innovation, powered by the Adams Hub for Innovation.

In my Introduction to Business class at Western Nevada College, we’ve recently completed our module on Entrepreneurship. Every time I cover this topic, the same question arises: Aren’t entrepreneurs and small business owners the same? The truth is, though most entrepreneurial ventures begin as small businesses, not all small business owners are entrepreneurs.

Surprising number of hiking trails at Carson's Washoe State Park

I haven't been doing hiking of late because of a back problem, but with my new electronic "tickle belt" I'm able to hit the hills again.

I recently returned to my old favorite Dead Man's Creek on Eastlake Boulevard about 5 miles from downtown Carson. It was 90-plus that day so I turned back burned out before reaching the gazebo that perches at the end of the trail, but I did discover a new sign at the trailhead, courtesy of Nevada Division of State Parks. It's one of the best trail signs I've seen in recent times.
