Nevada recognizes October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management, Department of Administration’s Enterprise IT Services, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance are participating in National Cyber Security Awareness Month to increase awareness throughout Nevada.
During Cyber Security Awareness Month, state agencies will dedicate each week to one of the five steps to educate and promote online safety. Informative messages will be disseminated on social media platforms, web sites and press releases.
Each week will focus on the steps necessary to stay safe while on the Internet.
— Week 1: October 1-4 – General Cyber Security Awareness: 5 Years of Stop.Think.Connect.TM
— Week 2: October 5-9 – Creating a Culture of Cyber Security at Work
— Week 3: October 12-16 – Connected Communities: Staying Protected While Always Connected
— Week 4: October 19-23 – Your Evolving Digital Life
— Week 5: October 26-30 – Building the Next Generation of Cyber Professionals
The highlight of the month will be a Cyber Security tabletop exercise on Tuesday, October 6 in the State Emergency Operations Center. DEM is hosting a Cyber Incident Tabletop Exercise from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This TTX is sponsored by FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) and will be delivered “virtually” through use of VTC technology to approximately 15 different jurisdictions and entities. The TTX will test current response and recovery activities based on current policies and procedures managed by IT Management and Emergency Management. Participants from state and local government will be participating.
Every year since 2004, the President designates October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Now in its 12th year, National Cyber Security Awareness Month promotes cybersecurity through events and initiatives. Since its inception, National Cyber Security Awareness Month has been formally recognized by Congress, Federal, state and local governments, and leaders from industry and academia. NCSAM has grown exponentially, reaching consumers, small and medium-size businesses, corporations, educational institutions, and young people across the nation.
Cyber security is the mechanism that maximizes our ability to grow commerce, communications, community and content in a connected world. This is an opportunity to engage the public to create a safe, secure, and resilient cyber environment. The Internet is a shared resource and securing it is Our Shared Responsibility.
