It's Your City: Nicole Goehring discusses statewide and Carson City recycling efforts
This week's guest on It's Your City is Nicole Goehring, recycling coordinator for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. She provides an update on statewide and local recycling figures and places where residents can take their items.
NevadaRecycles, a program through NDEP, is committed to reducing waste and increasing recycling opportunities. Its mission is to preserve and enhance the environment of the state in order to protect public health, sustain healthy ecosystems, and contribute to a vibrant economy. It was established in 1992.
The NevadaRecycles program promotes recycling, waste reduction, resource conservation, preservation and sustainability through education, public and private collaboration, and facilitation of partnerships with the public, educational institutions, private companies, non-profits, and other governmental organizations and agencies.
Goehring notes statewide recycling goals hit around 25 percent in 2013 with Carson City recycling reaching about 28 percent.
In the video she speaks about Carson City's curbside recycling program and provides an extensive list of area drop off points for recyclables, such as plastics and glass bottles, paper and newspaper, household waste, electronics such as phones, computers and TVs and other items. Waste Management does pick up recycling items for business at no charge, she explained.
Finally she notes NevadaRecycles is sponsoring a statewide Recycled Art Contest. Recyclables, including plastic bottles, newspapers, aluminum cans and steel cans, may be picked-up in the lobby of the Bryan Building, 901 S. Stewart Street, Carson City, on Friday, Oct. 3.
The art contest is open to all Nevada residents. Projects must be composed of used recyclable materials. Submission of entry form and photos of artwork are due by October 31, 2014. Winners will be announced prior to America Recycles Day, November 15.
Call 775-687-9466 to schedule a time to pick-up materials. More information about the contest, submission guidelines and prizes is available at NevadaRecycles.nv.gov.
