University of Nevada extension educator to leave Carson City post for Douglas County
Lindsay Chichester, extension educator with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) office in Carson City, will be leaving her position in the Nevada state capital for the extension educator post at the UNCE Douglas County office in Gardnerville.
Chichester, who has served as extension educator in Carson City since October 2015, has been a solid advocate for youth agricultural programs and was instrumental in bringing back the idea of a traditional county fair to the Nevada state capital.
The Carson City Fair debuted in 2017. It returned again this year in July, making it an annual summertime event featuring agricultural exhibits.
"This project was particularly important to me, because I grew up in 4-H going to various shows, fairs, and exhibitions where County and a State Fairs were part of the culture of the community and the state," Chichester said. "I wanted persons in and around Carson to be able to experience that County fair feeling and nostalgia for themselves and their family, and to create traditions and memories."
Chichester said many people deserve credit for bringing to fruition the idea of a traditional county fair in Carson City.
"A dedicated group of persons from non-profit groups and community volunteers worked tirelessly and held the first Fair in 2017," she said. "Overall it was a hit and the planning began for a second one."
Planning for the 2019 Carson City Fair has already begun, she said, as organizers seek to build upon the fair's success over the past two summers.
Chichester has served as Fair Board Chair since its inception, but she decided to step away last month to do more university work.
"I made the decision in August to step down as Chair of the Carson City Fair to focus more of my time on obtaining tenure," she said. "A month later, when I decided to transfer to Douglas, [that] ensured it was time to pass the reins onto someone else."
Her replacement on the Fair Board will be two persons co-chairing the committee, Chichester said. "I am excited to see what direction they choose to go with it."
Chichester said she still plans to be involved in the Carson City Fair to some degree. Just not in the active role she had assumed when planning for the first fair had begun.
"At this time, I will serve as a consultant/institutional memory and am planning on being involved as a partner in Douglas County, encouraging participation and assisting where we can at the Fair," she said.
As for Carson City, Chichester said she leaves behind a lot of good memories and positive experiences, having served on multiple boards and committees, including The Greenhouse Project, and volunteered in various capacities.
"I have very much enjoyed my time in Carson City, and making the decision to transfer to Douglas was not easy," she said. "I do look forward to doing more programming and outreach in agriculture" in Douglas County.
Chichester said she will be as actively engaged in the communities of the Carson Valley as she has been in the Nevada state capital.
"I have some exciting things planned and look forward to bringing some new and exciting things to the region," she said.
Chichester wraps up her duties at the Carson City UNCE office Oct. 12. She begins her post at the Douglas County office on Oct. 15, replacing retired educator Steve Lewis.
