Carson City District Attorney Rombardo will not seek third term
Carson City District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo will not seek a third term as the District Attorney of Carson City.
“I want to thank the people I work with in the District Attorney’s Office. They are an impressive team of professionals dedicated to making Carson City a better place. I also want to thank the voters of Carson City for giving me the opportunity to serve the community. It has been an honor to act as their District Attorney for the last seven years,” said Rombardo in a released statement.
Under Rombardo’s leadership, the District Attorney’s Office has developed and implemented several programs to address public safety problems, prevent crime, and restore the public’s confidence in the justice system. These initiatives include: the expansion of services offered to victims and witnesses of crime; implementation of the Gang Response Intervention, Prevention, and Suppression (GRIPS) program to promote early gang prevention; founding the Stop Abuse of Vulnerable and Elderly (SAVE) program to increase awareness, victim resources and prosecution in elder abuse cases; and establishing programs to address needs of Drug Endangered Children (DEC).
With the assistance of Partnership Carson City, the District Attorney’s Office received grants to fund United Latino Services and the Madres tu Madres program at the Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, Rombardo’s administration implemented “vertical” prosecution. A process that allows complicated cases to remain with one prosecutor from start to finish. As a result, the D.A.’s Office has seen an increase in successful prosecution as well as services to victims and witnesses.
Rombardo’s administration has participated in many community outreach programs. Last year the office created and participated in the trial of the “Big Bad Wolf” at local elementary schools and in the “Appeal of Hamlet” at Pioneer High School.
The District Attorney is also a community partner with the Carson School District.
The District Attorney cites victim-witness services and the prosecution of David Winfield Mitchell, a 1982 cold case murder that Rombardo with then Assistant DA Gardner successfully prosecuted in 2006 as his proudest accomplishments. “Words can never convey how proud I am to have brought the victim’s mother and family the justice they deserved,” said Rombardo.
Rombardo intends to serve until the end of his term in 2014. He hopes to see the 5 pending murder cases through to completion. “I am very happy with the success of our programs, and I have accomplished everything I set out to do as District Attorney. After a lengthy discussion with my children, I’ve concluded that there are more effective ways that I can serve my family and the community.” Rombardo said. “I look forward to exploring new opportunities and continuing to serve the people.”
