Carson City arrests: Woman jailed after stolen vehicle located at convenience store
A 52-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and drug related charges, a Carson City sheriff's report states.
April Marie James was taken into custody Sunday in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to an address on Columbia Way for a report of a stolen vehicle. Deputies made contact with the reporting party who stated she purchased a black 2006 Ford Fusion approximately 2 weeks prior.
She traveled out of the area and left the vehicle in front of the Columbia Way address. When she returned home, the vehicle was gone. She provided the deputy with a title that included the seller's information and her information.
While patrolling the area westbound on Highway 50 East a deputy observed a vehicle matching the description. It was parked and unoccupied at a convenience store on Highway 50 East.
Deputies confirmed the VIN on the vehicle that matched the stolen vehicle. While waiting a deputy observed a female subject enter the driver's seat of the vehicle. Deputies made contact with the woman, April James. She stated she purchased the vehicle approximately a week prior from someone for $200.
Upon conducting an inventory of the vehicle, deputies located a clear glass pipe with white residue that was located in the passenger side door. The paraphernalia was in plain view when the passenger door was opened. The vehicle owner arrived on scene and gave consent, allowing deputies to search the vehicle.
While searching, a purse was located inside the vehicle and contained a small bag and small container with a white crystal like substance of suspected methamphetamine. James was arrested for suspicion of the following: Possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $28,637.
In other arrests:
— A 57-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 8:14 a.m. in the 3300 block of South Carson Meadows for misdemeanor suspicion of trespassing and misdemeanor destruction of property. According to the arrest report, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the area for a report of an unwanted subject.
Deputies made contact with a reporting party who stated there was a man on his property that he had evicted. He stated he provided the man with a 10-day eviction notice making his last day allowed on the property August 31, 2019. The RP stated the man was back on the property and had broken the lock of a storage unit allowing him to gain access, the arrest report states.
Deputies made contact with the suspect at the unit and requested him to step out and speak. He was told numerous times to step out of the unit. Upon speaking he said he never received an eviction notice. He stated he received an envelope but never opened it.
Deputies did not see a padlock on the door of the unit. Officers observed the locking mechanism and padlock had been forced off the door. Dispatch confirmed the man was served an eviction notice on August 21, 2019. The RP filled out a citizen's arrest statement and the man was arrested for trespassing and destruction of property. Bail: $879.
— A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday, 1:25 a.m. in the 500 block of North Carson Street for a misdemeanor outside agency warrant, failure to appear, issued July 24, 2019 out of Fallon Township Court. Bail: $2,710.
— A 57-year-old Reno man was arrested Sunday, 5:54 p.m. in the area of College and Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI and failure to abide traffic signals following a traffic accident near the intersection.
According to the arrest report, deputies responded at 5:22 p.m. to a vehicle crash in the area of North Carson and College Parkway. Dispatch advised a male subject appeared to be intoxicated while attempting to exit his vehicle.
Upon arrival a deputy observed a red Ford pickup parked in the grass area east of the northbound travel lane. The vehicle had damage to the passenger side area long with three blown tires. In the driver's seat was the driver and sole occupant. As the deputy approached, several subjects in the area approached the officer, stating they believed the man was intoxicated. The officer asked the subjects if they saw the accident and they replied no, the report states.
Deputies made contact with the driver and asked him to explain what happened. He was clearly upset and having a hard time trying to explain what happened. The deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The man had red, watery eyes and slurred speech, according to the report.
The deputy instructed the man to exit his vehicle and he complied and was unsteady on his feet. Deputies asked the man for his driver's license and the man said it was in the vehicle.
He opened the driver side door and began looking for his license. The deputy instructed the man to step away from the vehicle and asked if he could look for the license. The man said yes and while looking the officer observed several empty glass beer bottles on the rear floor board, the arrest report states.
The officer asked the driver if he was willing to perform standardized field sobriety tests. The man said no. The officer explained to the man that the field sobriety tests were for his benefit and asked him again if he wanted to perform them. He again said no. The officer asked if he would voluntary provide a preliminary breath test and the man agreed. He provided a PBT of .241. The officer asked if he was taking any medication. The man said he was taking medication due to a recent hip and knee surgery, the report states.
The officer took the man into custody for suspicion of DUI. The officer read the man a request for voluntary evidence. The man voluntarily agreed to provide a blood sample and signed a consent to search form. Prior to transport, the man said his lower back and leg were hurting. He was asked if he wanted to go to the hospital to be checked out and he said yes. He was taken to the hospital. There, a lab assistant drew two vials of blood from the man's left arm. The man was medically cleared and taken to jail. Bail: $1,249.
According to the arrest report, deputies collected a statement from the other driver who said she was stopped at the light at College Parkway and North Carson Street facing west on College Parkway when the stop light turned green. She said she counted to five and proceeded through the intersection. She said the next thing she knew she heard a loud bang and realized she had been hit by a vehicle in the driver side door. She said she continued across the intersection and parked along the curb. She said she exited her vehicle because she had a headache and her left thigh was hurting.
