Fourth suspect in McCune murder pleads guilty
Raul Garcia entered a guilty plea today in Carson City District Court in the April 6, 2013 murder of Nevada's chief insurance examiner.
Garcia was arrested in connection with the beating death of William McCune, 62, at his apartment in Carson City. Three other co-defendants — Makyla Blackmore, Anthony Elliott and Michael Evans — pled guilty to lesser charges in October. Blackmore and Evans had agreed to testify against Garcia had it gone to trial.
Garcia pleaded guilty to first degree murder in perpetration of a robbery. He faces 20 years to life in prison. Sentencing will be Oct. 27. Sentencing options to be ruled by the judge are life without the possibility of parole, 50 years in prison after serving 20 years to life.
"By entering this plea today this concludes the case as to all the defendants in the murder of William McClune," said Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger.
When the judge asked Garcia about what he did, Garcia said "I was present at the apartment with everyone and I am as guilty as everyone else."
McCune's body was found in the Carson River bound with duct tape. The four were captured within two days, with the investigation extending as far as Las Vegas.
"This puts a final end to the senseless and ruthless murder of Mr McCune here in Carson City, a chapter that I hope to put long behind us," said Sheriff Ken Furlong. "I am so thankful to all the residents, businesses, and the investigative teams who tirelessly pursued this case, recovering his hidden body submerged in the river and capturing the four suspects spanning more than 400 miles in less than 48 hours. My condolences to the friends and family of Mr. McCune."
