Nevada emergency managers distribute nearly $7 million in federal grants
The Division of Emergency Management with the Nevada Department of Public Safety received nearly $7 million in federal grant money for 2015 designed to increase emergency preparedness throughout the state.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security allocates grant awards through two funding sources: Urban Area Security Initiative and the State Homeland Security Program. The amount of the grant money amounts to $6,734,500, according to DPS.
“State preparedness is an invaluable service. Collectively state’s leaders remain focused on security measures to keep Nevadans safe,” said DEM Chief Caleb Cage. “This comprehensive grant process is a great opportunity for leadership throughout the state to discuss strategies to achieve our number one priority: public safety.”
The 2015 UASI funds are dedicated to enhance the regional preparedness and capabilities by funding state and local security efforts in 26 high-threat, high-density urban areas. The money is allocated to cities across the nation according to public safety risk ranking.
Nevada received $3 million to enhance security measures. In 2015, Nevada received $3,734,500 SHSP funds dedicated to preparedness measures throughout the state's 17 counties. The SHSP provides financial support for the implementation of the National Preparedness System to address planning, organization, equipment, training, and full-scale exercise needs to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism and other catastrophic events.
The DHS grant funds are used to support the following top five priorities determined by the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security:
1. Cyber Security (Mission area: Protection)
2. Intelligence and Information Sharing (Mission area: Prevention) 3. Public Information and Warning (Mission area: All)
4. Operational Coordination (Mission area: All)
5. Mass Care Services (Mission area: Response)
