Carson City area Salvation Army Apple Tree Backpack and School Supply Drive underway

The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies and backpacks for at-risk children through August 14. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and the surrounding communities will receive school supplies and backpacks as needed.
The supplies will be distributed through The Salvation Army's 661 Colorado St. location and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the local school districts for distribution to children in transition.
As of today The Salvation Army already has over 300 request for supplies.
"A big part of a child's success in school is having the necessary supplies for the lessons they will be doing. In our constant goal of breaking the cycle poverty we want to give at-risk children every opportunity to succeed," said Captain Mark Cyr, commanding officer of the local Salvation Army, when explaining the need for the drive. Captain Mark also said that “the biggest shortages we have this year is pencils, crayons, colored pencils, 3 ring binders and the scientific calculators.”
This is the Army’s fourth year doing an Apple Tree school supply and backpack drive. Similar to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree program the program has “Apples” that have a child’s wishes on it to help donors shop. These Apple Trees can be found at any of the local businesses listed below.
School supply suggestions: pencils, crayons, colored pencils, 3 ring binders, scientific calculators, back packs, pens, scissors, pencil sharpeners, pencil pouches, paper, note books, composite books, glues sticks, highlighters, etc. and a box of healthy cereal.
Backpacks and supplies can be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 661 Colorado St. Carson City, before August 14. Online donations can be made at carsoncity.salvationarmy.org. Or one of the below locations:
