Old K-Mart owner wants to turn Carson City building into RV, boat and personal storage facility with retail spaces
There have been several rumors and public requests over the years to fill the old K-Mart building. Recently, calls for a Winco, Whole Foods, a second Target, an indoor go-cart track, and even a homeless shelter have been brought up. However, since the store shuttered in 2006, there’s been little to no movement on rebranding it.
Now, the Carson City Planning Commission will be hearing a proposal on bringing new businesses into the space.
However, the project is not a store, shelter, or go-cart emporium, but instead, a proposed storage facility.
The owner of the building, Carson Silver LLC., is proposing to convert the existing building to a personal storage, retail, office complex according to the Planning Commission agenda.
This will include personal storage spaces, indoor RV and boat storage, as well as outdoor RV and boat storage.
Similar to the current gym that takes up a portion of the northern frontage, 60 percent of the building’s street (or in this case, parking lot) facing frontage will be developed for additional retail and / or office space.
A location is also proposed for a sit-down restaurant on the south end of the building.
Businesses have often struggled to keep up revenue in the area since K-Mart’s closure, with more than a few storefront vacancies advertising leasing options.
According to the proposal, the project “uses and restores activity in the existing retail center; while a major component is storage, the project also includes retail, food / beverage and fitness facilities.”
It also states they’ll be adding facades to attract commercial tenants.

Staff is recommending project approval. The Planning Commission will meet Wednesday, July 31 at 5 p.m. Read the agenda here.
