Tazmanian Boxing Club spreads love of boxing to area seniors
Whoever may think that boxing is a sport for the young and fit obviously hasn't met Francisco Rodriguez, a former professional Bantam-weight boxing champion and now a Carson City resident who owns Tazmanian Boxing Club in Carson City.
In less than two years, the club has grown from a boxing gym started from the ground up by Rodriguez to a wellness program that is a lifestyle for many of its clients.
"We're growing step by step," he said. "A lot of people think that boxing is a rude sport, but boxing will help you with stress and self-esteem."
The transformation began in December 2015 with the introduction of Rock Steady Boxing, an exercise program designed for patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease.
Now Tazmanian Boxing Club is taking its trade to senior living facilities in the region and garnering interest among the area's elderly population.
"Tazmanian Boxing Club is proud to announce that they are now doing a Senior Exercise Outreach Program," Rodriguez said. "Certified trainers go to senior living facilities and teach the residents basic exercises and boxing techniques in order to increase range of motion, functional movement, increase strength, and enhance mobility."
Rodriguez said the benefits of boxing should not be lost to the elderly of Northern Nevada.
As an exercise activity, Rodriguez is proving that his sport is not just for the youthful and able-bodied. It's for everyone.
"A lot of us forget about our seniors and they want to be active themselves," he said.
Anyone interested in a free presentation on the Senior Exercise Outreach Program should call Desiree at 775-400-6047.
The club can also be contacted directly through Rodriguez at 775-722-1752 or by visiting the gym in person at 1701 South Sutro Terrace in Carson City.
