What Works: Wanderlust 2017 brings lessons in change, making a difference in the world
Those of you who have been reading this column for a while know, when I go to a festival, I bring nuggets back to you. I spent this last weekend at Wanderlust in Squaw Valley. This was my 5th year at the festival. As usual, it did not disappoint.
If you are going to a festival, be sure you go in open and willing. If you expect to get a certain something out of it and go looking for that something, you are likely to be disappointed with your experience. It’s the same thing with anything you read. Be patient enough to let the points impact you versus you trying to pull out meaning. I hope something in this article hits you in the heart today.
I decided to write this a little differently to share my experience. Read it as if you are talking about yourself. If it resonates, you will feel it.
Resilience: These thoughts were inspired by Meg McCraken, who I did three classes with this year. All this time, I’ve been hoping for the pain to go away. Instead, I need to embrace my past to create a better version of my being. There is no shame in my story. Instead of erasing the discomfort, or trying to numb it out by overlaying a new experience, I now lean into it to learn from it. I lean into uncertainty. I lean into what I am feeling versus trying to get over it. A cure erases the disease. Get it? DIS-EASE = Without ease. Healing integrates what happened with what is. It’s time for me to heal.
Making a Difference: These thoughts were inspired by Julian Brass. What does living a notable life mean to me? Why am I here? What is my intention with what I am currently doing? What would I want to see at the end of my life? I ask myself these questions and I get clarity on how I want to make a difference in the world. The reason I was given a sharp mind and an able body was to use it. So how am I using it? How am I engaging in personal growth, spiritual connection, health and wellness mastery, professional development, and social love to live a notable life? How will I make a difference today?
Change vs. Transformation: These thoughts were inspired by DavidJi. I can change anything at any time. I can change my hair color and it goes back. I can lose weight and gain weight. I can change my relationships. The difference between change and transformation is there is no undoing transformation. Once it’s done, it’s a new way of living and being. I shouldn’t ask myself what I want to change, but how I want to transform. This is how I come to live as my highest and best self.
Stress: These thoughts were also inspired by DavidJi. Stress is how I respond when my needs are not met. I must transform how I handle this. The needs of the heart are attention, affection, appreciation, and acceptance. When I am focused on the outcome of these things, my expectation is not met and I create stress. Nature hates a vacuum, a space where nothing is happening. So, when I am stressed out, I take a break and come back to the problem. If I’m really agitated, I reach for SODA (not Coca-Cola) Stop, Observe, Detach, Awaken. Resist nothing. In every moment, I will receive unconditional love, possibly from myself too.
Are you willing to unravel all you have trained yourself to be to become something new? This is a dawning of a new age for you. It’s time to embrace transformation.
Apply this to your business, career, or life and you will see a measurable difference in all of it. If you aren’t getting transformation, only change that ends up reverting to status quo, maybe it’s time to look at your resistance. Maybe it’s time to look at the boulders you are putting in your own road, the patterns and habits which result in playing the same record over and over.
You are not your thoughts. You are the being who observes your thoughts. This week’s challenge is just to be conscious of how you are talking to yourself. Is it gentle or is it harsh? Is it holding you back or moving you forward. Just notice, nothing more. If you noticed something interesting, post your insight in the comments below.
