ICYMI: Carson City School Board to decide Tuesday on re-opening plan for school year
The Carson City School Board will be voting on the final plan for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year and the effect COVID-19 has had on it at the board meeting this Tuesday, July 28, at 6 p.m.
The meeting, which will take place in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street, will decide on how the reopening of the new school year will go in Carson City Schools.
An important note is that they will be discussing whether or not to push back the opening of the school year one week, to begin on Aug. 24 so that teachers and staff members can undergo training.
What is currently being discussed is bringing all students back to school with a hybrid schedule. Students will be separated into two groups. On Mondays, both groups of students will remain at home. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Group 1 will be in school while Group 2 is at home, and on Wednesdays and Fridays, Group 2 will be in school while Group 1 is at home.
Some speciality cases, such as Comprehensive Life Skills and possibly Pre-K and Kindergarten will be allowed to attend 5 days a week.
For families who do not have reliable access to internet (including internet not only on a cell phone), the School District is discussing purchasing and providing mobile hot spots for students to be able to access the internet to do their school work, which will be paid for using the CARES grant.
According to a recent survey, ten percent of families in the school district do not have reliable access to the internet.
The District will be undertaking increased sanitation procedures to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and other germs. This includes a 2-day-a-week electrostatic mist disinfectant process, which utilizes specialized equipment and products that are aimed at killing bacteria and viruses.
Four days a week the same system will be used in common areas of the school such as hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, and any area where the entire student body could gather during the course of the week.
The district will be asking parents to decide whether or not their children will be riding the school bus to get to school, and once they have those numbers they will be deciding how to best social distance the students.
Teachers will also be providing either pre-recorded lectures, or lectures from educational videos on the internet, to help at-home students navigate their curriculum if they are having issues.
The plan will be finalized and voted on during the Tuesday meeting. The finalized plan should be in place for at least one full semester after the school year begins.
