Carson City Sheriff Furlong announces overall crime down in Carson City, tracked by new reporting software
According to crime data published by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Carson City’s overall crime had a 6 percent decline between 2018 and 2019.
“That’s great news, since those were both extremely successful years for the community,” said Furlong.
For this year, crimes against persons is down a remarkable 23 percent as compared to both 2018 and 2019. However, this past month there was an increase of 20 percent from May.
Crimes against persons includes crimes such as assaults, homicide, human trafficking, kidnapping, and sex offenses.
“Assaults leads this category, and not surprising, Simple Assaults has the greatest impact, accounting for 68 percent of the overall numbers,” said Furlong.
Crimes against property also increased during the past month, at 33 percent between May and June, but overall crime is down 12 percent from 2019 and 8 percent from 2018.
Crimes against property include arson, bribery, burglary, counterfeiting, vandalism, embezzlement, extortion, fraud, larceny, motor vehicle theft, robbery, and stolen property.
“Major contributing factors to this category are Vandalism and Larceny, combined accounting for 53 percent of the overall numbers,” said Furlong.
The new category this year is “Crimes Against Society” which includes crimes such as animal cruelty, drug/narcotic crime, pornography, prostitution, and weapons.
“This past month we saw an increase in activity by 36 percent, 40 percent over the 2019 number, and 33 percent over the 2018 number,” said Furlong.
91 percent of the total category is attributed to drug and narcotic offenses.
“When it comes to the lesser offenses, now known as Part B Offenses, we are showing a significant downturn for the year as well,” said Furlong. “June came in at a 44 percent increase, though for the year thus far, we are down by 27 percent and down by 34 percent from the previous year of 2018.”
Included in this category is Bad Checks, Curfew, Disorderly Conduct, DUI, Drunkenness, Offenses against Family/Child, Liquor Laws, Peeping Tom, Runaways, Trespass, and all others.
Though this is only accounting for half of the year, Furlong is pleased with the decreasing trends in crime.
“We are just halfway through the year, but on a very positive good pace,” said Furlong.
This year the Carson City Sheriff’s Office began using National Incident Based Reporting (NIBRS), after previously using Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), and became the first non-pilot agency to be certified.
