As our state faces horrific effects from the recent global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of our fellow Nevadans. Together we must stand united, stay positive, and support our fellow neighbors.

Boomers’ Legacy to Children: New Progressivism, Statism (Opinion)

This is the third in my series on the sad legacy we Boomers are leaving our children.

The first column defined the public interest as mainly maximizing economic growth. That piece and the second showed that the economic policies, practices and institutions that maximize growth also promote fairness among individuals. They also debunked obsessions with income inequality.

Here I focus on the revival of progressivism and liberal statism, plus the addition of political correctness (PC).

Will Nevada’s Female-Led Legislature Choose to Reform Its Legal System of Sexual Exploitation? (Opinion)

It’s big news: female lawmakers now hold 32 of the Nevada state legislature’s 63 seats. Thus, Nevada has the distinction of being the first state in the country to seat a female majority to its legislative assembly.

But, that this momentous occasion has transpired first in Nevada oozes with irony. After all, Nevada is the only state in the country that legally sanctions the buying and selling of women for sex.

The most emblematic measure of women’s true status in any society is reflected in its prostitution laws: are women public sexual commodities under the law or not?

Upcoming Legislation: Senate Bill 7 would sentence child sex trafficking consumers to life in prison

Senate Bill 7 was profiled on Nov. 14, 2018, and is summarized as, “An act relating to crimes; providing that a person who is less than 14 years of age for prostitution is guilty of sex trafficking; providing a penalty; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.”

Existing Nevada laws prohibit any person from engaging in prostitution or solicitation outside of a legal Nevada brothel.

Mourning the Loss of Dennis Hof (Opinion)

When news of the sudden death of Assembly candidate and brothel owner Dennis Hof reached us last Tuesday, we were quite stunned by it. We had gotten to know Dennis, and James had seen him several times in the weeks preceding his sudden departure.

One of his great gifts was the ability to make you feel you were the most important person in the room. Two occasions involving James come to mind, but Ron felt the same way.

Column: How Did All of This Happen? Part 2 (sponsored)

As I now conclude this particular article, it is just hours away from one of America's most revered events--if not the most. President-elect Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building at 12:00 noon on January 20, and Mike Pence will be duly sworn in as the Vice-President of the United States.

Color Us Skeptical

Climate change is the cause of everything, even crime, prostitution and terrorism.
Those are among claims studies have made in recent years. With world leaders meeting in Paris this week to discuss a new global climate treaty, we'll hear more of these stories.

The terrorism connection, which blames the rise of ISIS (or the Islamic State) on climate change in Syria, is particularly noteworthy because President Obama said earlier this year that climate change is a greater threat than terrorism. We're guessing that will encounter some skepticism in Paris right now.

Mental health is Nevada's albatross

During this year’s legislative session, my wife and I approached our state legislators about resources for Nevada’s most underserved population: The mentally ill.
There is a health crisis in our state, one which has grown into an epidemic across the nation, but one that is especially endemic right here in the Silver State.
Having lived more than twelve years in a state that seems to cater to many human vices, this comes as no surprise to me.
