Free or low cost ways to beat the heat this week in Carson City

If you’re anything like me, you are currently hunkered down in front of a fan with the curtains drawn tight like a modern-day vampire, hissing every time you have to go out into the sun.
If you or the kids want to escape from the cave for a bit, here are some free or low cost ways to stay cool in Carson City during this ongoing heat wave.
1. Hit the pool
Going to the pool is a classic way to keep cool during summer, and luckily we have several to choose from in the area.
Carson City Aquatic Facility: The Carson pool, located at 841 N. Roop St. is open Monday through Friday from 5:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., for all the programs and then open swim from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. and again from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Drop in costs are $5 for adults and $4 for youth (4-17) and seniors (60+). Babies and toddlers are free, as well as disabled veretarns. Family cost is $14. Be sure to ask about monthly and annual passes for discounted prices!
Carson Valley Swim Center: The Douglas Pool, located at 1600 NV-88 in Minden is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 am. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. he water slides are open Monday - Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m, Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop in costs are $6 for adults and $4 for seniors, youth and disabled individuals. $18 for family swim, and $0 for veterans and active military members.
Bowers Mansion Pool: The Bowers Mansion pool, located at 4005 Bowers Mansion Rd. is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Adults are $6, youth (3-17) and seniors (62+) are $5, and infants 2 and under are free.
2. Get your splash on
Don’t want to completely commit to a day at the pool? Then check out the splash pads! Perfect for little guys and even pets to cool off!
The Splash Pad in Carson City is located in McFadden Plaza across from the Nevada State Legislature. It is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk.
The Minden Splash Pad is located at Minden Park and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pets are not allowed at the Minden Splash Pad.
3. Carson City Library (air conditioned) activities all week long
Stopping by the library, located at 900 N. Roop St., is a favorite cooling activity for both grown ups and kiddos alike. The library offers events and activities for all age groups, in everything from teen hours to computer game tournaments, chess clubs, book clubs, story times, and more! Check out their full schedule of events here. They are open at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and on Sunday at noon.
4. Check out our local museums
Quiet, cool, calm: no, not the library, which is all of those things as well, but our local museums!
The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, located at 813 N. Carson St. is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children under 2 are free; Children 2 years are $5, 3-13 is $10, and adults (14+) are $3.
The Nevada State Museum, located at 600 N. Carson St., is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $10 adults, free for children (0-17) and museum members.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located at 2180 S Carson St., is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday. The Cost is $8 for adults and free for children (0-17).
The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum, located at 1 Jacobsen Way, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for everyone.
Take in family movies outdoors
Summer Movie Night happening Friday at LifeChurch Carson
Join LifeChurch Carson at 1600 Snyder Ave, Carson City, Friday, July 12th at 6pm for our Carson Outdoor Movie Night! Come and enjoy free bounce houses, snow cones, hot dogs, and popcorn before the show.
We will be showing Migration Movie starting at 7:30 pm. This is an outdoor event, so please bring your chairs and blankets to bundle up with. This is a fun event for the whole family and we can't wait to see you there! LifeChurch is located at 1600 Snyder Ave, Carson City.
Carson City Friday Family Fun Days at Mills Park
Each Friday, event goers can find either live music or a community movie in the park along with a selection of food trucks. Kids actives include giant Jenga, giant 4-across, giant velcro kick darts, cornhole, bean bag skee ball, chicken fingers, and a selfie spot.
