Saturday's Levitt AMP Carson City concert series features double bill of local, national musicians
The Brewery Arts Center continues an unforgettable season of free music under the stars in Carson City. With 8 concerts to go all summer, grab your family, friends and neighbors and get ready to head on down to Carson City and Brewery Arts Center for Levitt AMP Carson City presented by The Change Companies.
Sponsored in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a private family foundation that empowers communities to transform neglected public spaces into thriving destinations through the power of free, live music, the Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series presents 10 free, family-friendly concerts to the public at the Minnesota Street Stage right in the heart of the historic district in Downtown Carson City.
The series has a diverse lineup of high caliber talent spanning genres like Celtic, R&B, country, rock, Latin and Brazilian.
On Saturday, July 7, 7 p.m. the Minnesota Street stage will rock a double header with singer, songwriter Ian Moore from Austin, Texas and local phenom Athena McIntyre and her all female band.
Blown in from the Northern Nevada desert like a tumbling sage, with a rakish smile and shock of blonde hair, sun-kissed and freckled cheeks, Athena McIntyre can simultaneously warm your skin and chill your bones. This ‘gurl with a guitar’ will sneak up and hit you like a Washoe Zephyr. Her music and lyrics are as much a part of the Nevada landscape as they are a reflection her own inner landscape.
Athena’s bluesy fierceness has captivated audiences and propelled her decade long musical career, most strongly in Northern Nevada, especially the greater Carson City and Reno-Tahoe communities and music scenes, but all along the west coast. As a singer-songwriter she has had the pleasure of playing or being featured at a variety of events, outlets and venues including Artown, The Knitting Factory, NadaDada, Whiskey Dicks, America Matters Radio, Race for the Cure, the Nevada State Fair and Whiskey A-Go-Go.
Echoing her mythological namesake, Athena’s practical wisdom is an element of the storytelling in her songwriting. Her sincere lyricism and dynamic vocals create vivid stories and impart relatable experiences that resonate with many audiences and fellow singer-songwriters. Athena has recently opened for Dan Aykroyd at the Hard Rock Casino in Tahoe, having shared the stage with talents such as Marina V, Chris Pureka, Taproot and Reno’s own breakout star, Whitney Myer.
Ian Moore, the Seattle-based, Austin, Texas-born guitar player, singer and songwriter makes the proverbial renaissance man look lazy. Coming on the heels of Strange Days, his most successful record since his eponymous debut and despite a never-ending cycle of touring, Moore offers a new record of bright, blazing rock-n-roll that combines his legendary guitar prowess with radio-friendly songs that showcase his elastic, soul-inflected vocals.
He also founded the artist’s healthcare alliance SMASH (Seattle Musicians Access to Sustainable Healthcare) and has joined the board of NARAS for the Pacific Northwest as governor and head of the advocacy committee. As always, Ian has his eyes on the challenges faced by musicians of every stripe, having experienced the spectrum of artist successes and tribulations over a nearly 30-year career.
“It’s a very different climate right now. When we hit a city, it doesn’t matter that I have 14 records, radio hits, etc. The only thing that matters is if we can really show up and leave the people feeling they saw something amazing. It keeps me hungry, and I like the challenge,” says Moore.
The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open lawn and lot setting. Food trucks, libations and kids activities will be available at each of the shows. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota. Admission is free.
