UPDATE: Evans Fire in southwest Reno at 63 acres, 50 percent contained
UPDATE MONDAY 1:35PM: The Evans Fire saw no growth overnight and remains at 63 acres and is now 50 percent contained, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release. Firefighters will continue to mop up and improve the line around the fire Monday afternoon. Helicopters will continue to be used to address smokes within the fire area.
The Evans Fire is west of Reno on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District in Evans Canyon near the Mount Rose Wilderness area. The fire burned in an area that is extremely steep with dense vegetation and timber. The U.S. Forest Service is the lead agency on the incident since the fire was all on National Forest System lands.
There are around 226 personnel on the fire including six hand crews, four helicopters, and various overhead. Current cooperators on the fire include Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF).
“We really want to thank all the cooperators who responded to the fire yesterday,” said Bill Dunkelberger, Forest Supervisor for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. “They included Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, BLM, NDF, and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.”
U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) have determined the Evans Fire was human caused, but the specific cause is still under investigation. LEOs are looking for a vehicle of interest, a green lifted Jeep Cherokee with a LED light bar on the roof. If anyone has information that could help identify the owner of the vehicle, please contact Captain Don Harris at Forest Service Law Enforcement at (775) 355-5327 or deharris@fs.fed.us.
Dunkelberger added, “Human caused fires not only destroy natural resources, they also put our first responders at risk.”
