Applications sought for Carson City Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Citizen Academy will return August 1 and is looking for residents who wish to join. The academy is a community program of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for the development and understanding of citizens in their knowledge of policies, procedures and action of the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Ken Furlong is opening the doors of CCSO for 12 consecutive Wednesday nights for the Citizen Academy, giving residents a better understanding of the sheriff’s office and its functions.
Sheriff Furlong is committed to having a strong partnership with the residents of Carson City and community at large. The important partnership between the sheriff’s office and the citizens of Carson City will make our community safer and a better place to live.
Each academy session will start with a question and answer session prior by Sheriff Furlong.
Each department of the Sheriff’s Office will be a teaching session over the 12 weeks. We will have a tour of the detention center, and an on-site visit to the communications 911 dispatch center.
There will be speakers from patrol, crime lab, evidence, investigations, Special Enforcement Team, Gang Unit, DUI and traffic regulations, as well as speakers to discuss domestic violence and elderly abuse, search and rescue, the Nevada Highway Patrol. There will be a Sheriff’s K-9 demonstration and an on-site SWAT demonstration.
Class will begin August 1 and run to Oct. 17 on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff’s Office, 911 East Musser Street.
The SWAT demonstration will be held at Fire Station 52 on College Parkway. If you are interested in attending the 12-week Academy, contact Ken Smith at (775) 283-7810. For further information or to pick up an application during business hours ask someone at the front counter of the sheriff’s office. Applications must be submitted by July 25.
