'S' over Carson City hillside restored after vandalism; city to install new trail signs
UPDATE: The 'S' on the side of the hill in southeast Carson City that commemorates the Stewart Indian School, and has been there for decades, was vandalized over the weekend. It has since been restored.
Carson Now reader Deb Ridgeway contacted us and said that the property is maintained by Carson City. The "S" commemorates Stewart Indian School.
We reached out to the Carson City and Washoe Tribe regarding the incident. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong noted that as of 10:50 a.m. Monday, the 'S' was put back into place.
The Bureau of Land Management was contacted and a spokeswoman said the land is not under BLM jurisdiction.
"Whoever did it is not known, whatever happened it has already been corrected," said Sheriff Furlong.
UPDATE: Stewart Indian School posted the following to their social media page:
Everyone in the Carson City region: we want to let you know that although someone changed the Stewart 'S' sign on the hill outside Stewart Indian School, it was not permanent. Someone draped some plastic over the S. That is now city property and they are in the process of fixing it. By later today, it was will be the familiar Stewart 'S' we all know and love. And just letting you know that the City is putting new trail signs along the area and there will be one sign talking about the history of Stewart Indian School and another sign talking about the Stewart alumni who made the very first Stewart 'S' and all the efforts to repaint it by different classes at Stewart over the years. Watch the Stewart Facebook page for the grand opening of the new signage.
UPDATE: Carson City spokesman Cameron Gresh advised the area the "S" is on, as well as the surrounding area is all considered Prison Hill Recreation Area and it was transferred to Carson City from the BLM via a land's bill called Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009. These lands are managed by Carson City under the Open Space Program.
