Carson City Fire Department: Prepare for record temperatures this weekend
The National Weather Service advises that it is highly confident of a potentially historic heat wave beginning Thursday through at least Sunday, June 28. Residents and visitors can expect temperatures to reach high temperatures from 100 to 107, with the potential to tie or break all-time record highs throughout the region.
Extremely high or unusually hot temperatures can affect health. On average, 658 deaths from extreme heat events occur each year in the United States. Most vulnerable are the elderly, those who work or exercise outdoors, infants and children, the homeless and poor without air conditioning, fans and proper ventilation, and people with a chronic medical condition. Pets are also at risk for heat-related illness if left unattended. The Carson City Fire Department advises residents and visitors to:
— Remain inside during the hottest hours of the day, if possible.
— Dress in loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
— Avoid strenuous work during the hottest part of the day.
— Stay hydrated. Don't wait until you're feeling thirsty.
— DO NOT leave pets in vehicles or in unprotected outdoor spaces. Provide plenty of water.
— Curtail outdoor activities for vulnerable populations.
— Check on at risk friends, family, and neighbors at least twice per day.
— Know what to do in a heat emergency to recognize signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
— Check your local television broadcasts or radio stations for extreme heat warnings and safety tips.
For more information on safety during this type of heat event, please access information from the following sources Plan Ahead Nevada here; American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter here; CDC Emergency Preparedness and Response here; and the National Weather Service here.
Additionally, moisture will stream over the region Friday through at least the weekend increasing our chances for thunderstorms. Very strong outflow winds, dangerous frequent lightning and small hail will accompany stronger storms. If you hear thunder, the best plan of action is to go indoors and have a plan.
