Carson City caretaker jailed after allegedly burglarizing home of disabled former client

A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday on felony charges of burglary of an elderly person and drug sales after allegedly breaking into the home of a disabled 75-year-old man whom she had previously worked for as a caretaker, stealing his cash, coins and firearms from a bedroom safe, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Bambi Segna was arrested for the alleged crimes and is being held on $91,137 bail. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Clemens Drive for a residential burglary report. A 75-year-old victim called police and stated someone broke into his residence and stole a safe with valuables inside and two firearms. The victim is restricted to a wheelchair and needs assistance from caretakers in order for him to live independently, the arrest report states.

Deputies met with the man and his current caretaker. Officers looked through the man’s home where the burglary had occurred and discovered the window from the dining room was broken with the screen pulled out. It appeared as if the suspect entered the home through the window and there were blood spots on the window sill.

The victim showed officers his bedroom. On the west wall of the room was a closet where the safe was located. The safe appeared to be bolted to the wall but was broken away from the drywall. There were drops of blood in the area of the closet. There was a pair of bolt cutters nearby that the victim stated were his and were normally stored in the garage. The safe was missing as well as two firearms. The mirror in the hallway outside the master bedroom was also broken.

The victim said he left the home at 2:45 p.m. with his caretaker for a doctor’s appointment. He said he returned at around 3:30 p.m. and discovered the burglary and called police.

Due to the amount of physical evidence, a crime lab responded. At 4:45 p.m. a crime technician processed the crime scene. A detective was also briefed and began investing the case. Meanwhile officers conducted an area canvass. A witness said he saw a female with masculine features leave the home at around 2:45 p.m. He stated the woman was wearing a light colored shirt and light colored shorts. The witness stated he saw the woman dragging what appeared to be a piece of luggage to a vehicle, a silver Toyota sedan.

With the information collected from the witness, officers shared it with the victim and asked about his former caretaker. He stated Bambi Segna was a former caretaker along with another woman. The victim said he sold his Toyota Camry to Segna with an agreement to pay $200 per month for the vehicle. He stated she was not making her payments but still had the vehicle in her possession.

Officers asked the victim if he thought Segna and the other woman were involved in the burglary and he said yes, and that they knew where the safe was located. The officer asked the victim if he ever gave his safe code to either of them and he said no, he was very diligent about protecting it because of previous thefts.

The officer asked the victim if the women knew of his appointment schedule. He said he wasn’t sure but when he returned from the doctor and discovered the burglary, he had several missed calls on his home phone. There were five missed calls from a blocked number. The time of calls were 2:54 p.m. (twice) a call at 3 p.m. and two calls at 3:01 p.m.

The victim said he suspected the women may have called the home to confirm he was not home. The officer asked him what was included in his safe and what was missing from his home. He reported gold and silver coins, $800 in cash, a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver handgun; a Winchester pump action rifle, several bottles of narcotic pain medication, and a custom police nightstick lathed in wood.

Segna was found at her residence in the 700 block of South Curry Street where she is registered there as an ex-felon. Deputies stopped the woman as she was pulling out of the residence. Other people were in the vehicle, including the victim’s other former caretaker, and two men, including the son of Segna.

Officers attempted to interview Segna but she invoked her Miranda rights and terminated the interviewed. The witness was called to the scene and positively identified Segna as the woman he saw leaving the victim’s home, noting he was 100 percent sure and that she was wearing the same clothing.

Based on blood left at the scene, the officers looked at Segna’s hands, feet and legs to check for injuries. There were lacerations and bruises on her legs and what appeared to be a newer laceration on her left forearm.

She was taken into custody. A search warrant was issued by a Carson City judge for the home and two vehicles on the property. Officers searched the Toyota Camry used in the burglary. Officers located the nightstick that was stolen from the home, located on the driver’s seat on the floor.

Officers searched the truck of the vehicle and found a red backpack with Segna’s identification, along with several baggies of methamphetamine, a meth pipe and several spoons. Inside the home officers found several baggies of marijuana in the refrigerator that appeared to be packaged as “dime sacks” for sale.

There was also a backpack in the oven. Inside the backpack was a piece of tupperware that contained about an ounce of marijuana, a scale, a pipe and other baggies indicative of drug sales. Officers also found several piece of burnt foil, tooter straws commonly used for inhaling drugs.

She was booked into custody on the following charges: burglary of a victim over 65 years old, maintaining a drug house and possession of controlled substances for sale, all felonies, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
