Carson City Sheriff's Office ramps up pedestrian, motorist crosswalk enforcement in June
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada will be stepping up pedestrian safety patrol efforts throughout June, specifically in areas where there are crosswalks.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to “Watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks" and with a future date to be announced, will conduct crosswalk operations in various areas throughout Carson City.
Reducing pedestrian fatalities is not just the driver’s responsibility but, the walker as well. As we prepare for summer, we will see many people walking, running and riding bicycles. For those of you, who will be actively enjoying the warmth of the days to come, help out motorists by being seen.
Wear bright colored and reflective clothing. Even when out in the daylight hours, you want to be visible. When crossing the streets, help the motorists see you before you cross. It is a misconception that the pedestrian always has the right of way. You must make sure that there is adequate distance for the approaching vehicle to stop for you before crossing. Make eye contact before stepping out and make sure the driver acknowledges you.
Even when walking your pet, it is a good idea to wear something that will catch the attention of drivers. Protecting you and your pet is always wise. Don’t forget to make sure that your pet is on a leash so that they do not run out into traffic should something spook them or they decide to run after another animal.
Bicyclists are required to have head lamps and tail lamps for night time riding. Reflective bands and reflective tape help you and your bicycle to be seen better at night. Wearing a helmet when riding is crucial should you be involved in a crash. Follow the rules of the road by stopping for stop signs, red lights, etc.
As the nights will be warm as well, more people than usual will also be out so, the clothing that you wear will make the difference between being seen and being invisible to motor vehicle headlights
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nationally, 4,735 people were killed in 2013. Nevada consistently ranks among the 10 worst States for pedestrian fatalities. Nearly 90 percent of pedestrians and drivers involved in fatal crashes are
local residents, not visitors! (NHTSA and UNLV TRC)
Grant Funding for Joining Forces is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. These monies are used to pay for additional deputies who will be out looking for pedestrian related violations.
Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of DUI, distracted driving, seat belt use, speeding and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
