In 2021, Greater Nevada Mortgage, through its Keys to Greater program and with the help of more than 2,000 mortgage clients, contributed a total of $119,300 to help young adults in northern Nevada find a place of hope.

This year, Keys to Greater returns, with a portion of the revenue of every new mortgage or refinanced mortgage funded through GNM to be donated to the Eddy House and the Northern Nevada Dream Center in Carson City.

On Friday, July 1, Lake Tahoe’s Sierra Nevada University was acquired by the University of Nevada, Reno.

As of July, the Incline Village college, previously Sierra Nevada College, which first opened its doors in the fall of 1969 with 23 students, will go forward as the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.

Carson High School graduate Hayden Breiter won one of the nation’s highest awards at the 2022 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Atlanta, this past June 22-23, 2022. Kasey Kemmet, Carson High School SkillsUSA advisor, accompanied Breiter to Atlanta. Breiter was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Restaurant Service.

More than 300 volunteers, an eight-person dive team, and one beach-cleaning robot spread out across five Lake Tahoe beaches Tuesday in a collaborative effort to remove leftovers from July 4th celebrations, as part of the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s annual Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue Beach Cleanup.

Summer school students at Empire Elementary School in Carson City spent 20 minutes each morning to dedicate an engineering focus to create arcade games out of cardboard, tape, glue and other found materials. They collaborated, designed, tested and problem solved throughout the engineering process. On the last day of summer school, the students had fun playing each other’s games.

A 22-year-old man was arrested Friday for suspicion of possession of promotion of sexual performance conduct, child pornography and other alleged sex crimes, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

SPARKS, Nev. — In a continuation of food security efforts to ensure food is available to those who need it, the Nevada Department of Agriculture is seeking to fund projects to improve food access, distribution and infrastructure in Nevada. A total of $9 million is available using American Rescue Plan Act funds through two grants in which community organizations, food banks, and public and Tribal entities engaged in food assistance activities are encouraged to submit projects for funding.

A brush fire near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe briefly closed Highway 50 in both directions Monday night. It has since been reopened.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space announced it will continue preventative fire measures at the Prison Hill Off Highway Vehicle Area and the motorized trailhead/parking located on Golden Eagle Lane in Carson City. During days when there's a Red Flag wind warning issued, the trail will be closed.

After July 4th festivities, Tahoe’s beaches are often left littered with trash, which can hurt wildlife and the lake’s unique water quality and clarity. Each July 5 since 2013, the League to Save Lake Tahoe recruits hundreds of volunteers to participate in organized efforts to clean Tahoe’s beaches.

Independence Day has arrived along with cooler temperatures and breezy conditions by this afternoon around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region. The breezes should, however, calm some later in the evening in time for fireworks shows, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
