Nevada Congressman Amodei votes 'no thank you' for commission to investigate U.S. Capitol attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Mark Amodei (NV-02) released the following statement Wednesday after voting against H.R. 3233, legislation to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex:

“What happened on January 6th was an absolute tragedy. I will not dispute that. Unfortunately, just like many issues these days, this tragedy has become hyper politicized. Between task forces, commissions, prosecutors, and committees, quite frankly, I’ve grown incredibly weary of Congress’s addiction to “special” this and “special” that. So, for anyone who has a desire to continue to politicize this issue, go ahead, you already have plenty of ways to do that without a special commission.

"Even if we knew who was going to serve on this commission, I am still additionally concerned about the scope of this legislation and its potential to hinder the ongoing investigative work of other agencies and committees, including the work my colleagues and I have done, in relation to January 6th, on the Legislative Branch Subcommittee. Finally, this is yet another example of a few people getting together and deciding how rank-and-file Members should be voting. No thank you.”

Editor's Note: NBC News reports the House on Wednesday voted 252-175 to create an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, but the bill faces a different landscape in the Senate, where it needs at least 10 Republicans and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell opposes it.

To begin, I sometimes speak up when a little voice deep down inside is shouting, “Don’t do it!” That happened at the VA last month when they were telling me when to return to have my stitches out. I told them I had a semester of pre-med and could take out my own stitches. I heard a janitor in the back of the room laugh, but a capable nurse handed me a bundle of tools, placed her caring hand on my shoulder, and sent me home.
