Carson City eighth-grader wins Discover Your Nevada essay contest
Nadia Hill, an eighth-grade student at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City, has won the 2018 Discover Your Nevada essay contest, Nevada State Superintendent Steve Canavero announced Wednesday.
The statewide contest, now in its second year, is organized by the Nevada Division of Tourism (TravelNevada) and the Nevada Department of Education. The contest is part of TravelNevada’s Discover Your Nevada effort encouraging Nevadans to travel within the state. Nadia’s essay on the Clown Motel in Tonopah stood out for its effective scene-setting and intriguing meditation on Tonopah’s paranormal aspects.
“The judges enjoyed the essay’s humorous tone along with the presentation of historical facts about Tonopah,” David Peterson, interim director of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, said. “At TravelNevada, we like to say that you ‘go home with more stories than souvenirs,’ and Nadia’s essay definitely embodies that spirit of fun and adventure.”
As a prize, Nadia and a few family and friends will take an all-expenses-paid field trip throughout the state this summer. Those planning their own Nevada trip can visit DiscoverYourNevada.com to access seven road trip itineraries throughout the state.
Routes include the Great Basin Highway, the Loneliest Road in America and the E.T. Highway, and include attractions along the way as well as suggestions on where to eat and stay. Travelers on those routes who are sharing trip pictures on social media are asked to use the hashtag #DiscoverNV during their stops.
