Grocery store chain hosts peanut butter drive to help local food bank feed kids this summer
Save Mart stores in Carson City have partnered with the Ron Wood Family Resource Center for the annual "Peanut Butter Roundup" to provide local children access to food through the summer months.
The grocery store chain is partnering with local food banks throughout Northern Nevada and California for the drive, which begins Wednesday and runs through the end of May. Collection barrels will be located near the checkstand area to place donations.
Last year, Save Mart and its sister store Lucky collectively received nine tons of peanut butter during a similar drive.
To give the campaign a boost, Jif peanut butter and Smucker’s jelly are each offering a Buy One/Give One promotion, making it easy for shoppers to participate. Every time they buy one jar of peanut butter or jelly, they get another one free to donate.
New this year is the “roundup” feature at the cash register. In addition to the Buy One/Donate One option, shoppers can roundup their grocery tab, and 100 percent of the change will benefit local food banks.
“We raised enough peanut butter in 2015 to make more than a quarter-million sandwiches,” said Nicole Pesco, Save Mart’s Co-President and Chief Strategy and Branding Officer. “We’re thrilled to be able to help the communities our stores serve.”
The Peanut Butter Roundup is designed to raise awareness of the struggles many families experience during the summer break when their kids have no access to school meals.
According to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, one in four of the state’s children goes to bed hungry each night. This campaign helps fill the gap by stocking the pantries of local food banks. Peanut Butter makes for a perfect donation because it’s high in protein, shelf-stable and kids enjoy it.
Save Mart encourages the use of #PeanutButterRoundup to post pictures on social media.
Peanut butter collected at Save Mart’s Reno and Sparks stores will help the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and the ones collected at our stores in Carson City will benefit the Ron Wood Community Resource Center.
