Travel tourism insights bring tribal leaders to Carson City
Tourism brings millions of dollars to American Indian tribes each year. Sustaining growth and promoting cultural heritage help build successful Nevada tribal communities. Coming to Carson City this Wednesday and Thursday, the 8th Annual Nevada Tribal Tourism Conference is an opportunity for tribal leadership, artists, grant writers, vendors and museum curators to hear from presenters who can help them build local tourism and economies.
Held at the Governor’s Mansion in 2016, the conference will feature the theme “Building Tourism Capacity, Building the Future.” Leaders will share insight on topics that include the NATIVE Act, intellectual property rights protection, cultural collections management, and government funding for tourism-related projects.
Claudia Vecchio, director of the Nevada Division of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is the keynote speaker on April 27. The conference begins at 9 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m. April 28.
“Data shows that visitation and travel to our nation’s tribal communities and attractions is steadily increasing. Through this conference we are preparing our Nevada tribes to capture their share of this billion dollar industry,” said Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission and chair of Nevada’s Indian Territory, host of the event.
Rupert will share insights on building the Stewart Indian School Trail and attendees will visit the historic site during the conference. Camille Ferguson, executive director of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association will speak on the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience Act and how it will benefit local tribes. Anna Berrera, of A2B Consulting, speaks on introducing nativeamerica.travel to the world.
The conference is targeted to Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah tribes. Information is available at NevadaIndianTerritory.com or from Chris Gibbons at cgibbons@nic.nv.gov or (775) 687-8333.
