Carson City area weather: More gusty winds prompt advisory, Sierra could see 1 to 3 feet of snow
Another blast of stormy weather is on tap through Friday with gusty winds returning ahead of the main system that is expected to bring 1 to 3 feet of snow to the Sierra, valley rain with a chance of some lower elevation snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.
A Wind Advisory is effect from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Thursday for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas.
Winds will be from the southwest 20 mph to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected. The weather service advises to secure loose outdoor items and trash cans before winds increase. The winds could result in some down tree limbs and a few power outages, forecasters said.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of the Sierra and at Lake Tahoe, which could see anywhere from 1 to 3 feet of snow when it all shakes out.
Impacts down to western Nevada valley floors are possible by Friday morning, according to the weather service.
"Forecast snowfall totals are still on track with 1 to 2 feet along and west of Highway 89, and above 8,000 feet in Mono County; locally up to 3 feet along the immediate crest. Lassen and Plumas, generally 3 to 8 inches west of US-395 with isolated 18 inch amounts near the higher passes. Still looking for an inch or less in lower Nevada valleys, but this would likely not occur until the low moves over us early Friday which will usher in a colder airmass and lower snow levels," forecasters noted in the latest NWS weather discussion. "Be on the lookout during the Friday morning commute and allow extra time, since the roads will likely be wet at the very least."
Travel could be very difficult with long delays and possible highway closures over the Sierra. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commutes Thursday into Friday. Strong winds and heavy snow accumulations could damage tree limbs and produce power outages. The latest road conditions can be found at NVroads.com or by calling 511.
