According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, there are up to 3.5 million people experiencing homelessness in a given year. Roughly 10 percent of homeless people are pet owners, leaving potentially hundreds of thousands of homeless pets throughout the country.
Frederick and her team have provided food and emergency medical care to more than 12,800 pets while 400 tons of pet food has been collected by Pets of the Homeless. There are more than 375 donation and collection sites nationwide. Pets of the Homeless has also provided over $330,000 in veterinary care.
Pets of the Homeless believes in the healing power of companion pets and of the human-animal bond which is very important in the lives of many homeless. They find solace, protection and companionship through their pets. They care for their pets on limited resources so they themselves have less.
The task, nationwide, is to feed and provide basic emergency veterinary care to their pets and thus relieve the anguish and anxiety of the homeless who cannot provide for their pets. Pets of the Homeless is the only national animal organization focused completely on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless.
