Prison inmate walkaway in custody after stealing and crashing Carson City water truck
UPDATE: 3:31PM: The suspect who escaped a Carson City prison work camp and stole a water truck, crashing it Wednesday morning on Foothill Road in Douglas County had attempted to steal another vehicle, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Before the crash, a witness called authorities informing them that he had seen and chased away a man acting suspicious in the 3700 block of Highway 395, according to Sgt Bernadette Smith, public information officer for DCSO.
The suspect, Martin Eric Joseph, 49, was seen running north toward Fuji Park in Carson City. Joseph was serving 19 to 48 months at the Stewart Conservation Camp in south Carson City after violating parole for grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
When DCSO arrived in the area of Fuji Park, Carson City employees advised them that their large white water truck had just been stolen. Deputies were looking for the stolen vehicle and suspect in the area when a report of a head-on, side swipe crash had occurred on Foothill Meadows and Foothill Road in Genoa.
As Douglas County deputies arrived to that location, they were advised Joseph had exited and ran from the scene. It was later determined that the suspect had entered the garage of an address on Foothill Meadows and attempted to steal another vehicle.
The residents alerted to the noise and the suspect again was chased off, and ran on foot onto Limousine Court.
The two deputies that arrived, both K-9 officers, saw the suspect and took him into custody. No one was injured in the car accident, said Sgt. Smith.
