DREAM Act walkers stop in Carson City
A group of young men and women who are walking across the country to raise awareness for the DREAM Act made a stop in Carson City on Wednesday, in an unsuccessful attempt to elicit support from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.
The Campaign For An American DREAM walkers each have their life stories about how they or their family members came to this country as children, but now face deportation because of their immigration status.
One of the walkers, Lucas Da Silva, was brought to America by his parents from Brazil when he was a baby. He didn't know about his immigration status until his 15th birthday when he asked his parents to take him to get his driver's license. Now this straight A student with dreams of going to college fears he'll be deported to a country where he can neither read nor write the language.
Jonathan Martinez dreamed of joining the Coast Guard until the recruiter told him it would be impossible because his parents had brought him to America illegally. He then worked two jobs to pay is way through college because he couldn't apply for loans or grants without fear of being found out. During his senior year, he was detained for four weeks and faces deportation.
The group had hoped to meet with Gov. Sandoval on their trek through Carson City, but the governor was in Las Vegas, and none of his staff had time to meet with the group.
The DREAM Act would allow people who were brought to this country as children to stay here if they go to college or serve in the military.
