Carson City weather: Valley rain, wind and Sierra snow Friday and again Sunday
The next in a series of disturbances will push through the Sierra and Carson City region on Friday bringing gusty winds and rain showers to the valley with some snow in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will become gusty across the region with gusts reaching 30-40 mph by Friday afternoon with the strongest along the Highway 395 corridor. Gusts across the Sierra ridgetops could reach near 100 mph.
Hazardous boating conditions are expected along with possible travel restrictions for high profile vehicles. This system will also provide another round of Sierra snowfall with snow levels generally between 6,000 and 7,000 feet from far northeast California to Mono County.
The best window to see snowfall will be Friday afternoon into the late evening hours. Snow totals will range from 4 to 10 inches possible along the crest in the Tahoe Basin with 3 to 6 inches along the crest in Mono County. Otherwise up to a couple of inches are possible at lake level with light rain showers in western Nevada.
Showers will taper off by early Saturday. The likelihood for enhanced runoff from low elevation rain remains high, according to the weather service.
The next storm Sunday afternoon into Monday will bring similar conditions with light to moderate rain, mountain snow, and gusty winds. Snow levels will drop into the foothills by Monday morning, tapering to rain and snow showers at all elevations Monday evening. This storm could linger into Tuesday morning.
